I must be crazy, I actually like the new Enterprise design

At first, I didn't really like the Nu-Prise (that first publicity still was a horrible angle). But, now, I've got the image of the Nu-Prise and the Kelvin flying away from the camera as my desktop image. It's definitely in my "fav-five":

1 - Enterprise Class
2 - Constitution Class
3 - Nu-Prise
4 - Miranda Class
5 - Sovereign Class

I'd like it as well, however I have some major issues with it:

- why are nacelle pylons so crooked inwards? Looks weird. I'd like those pylons bent backwards, like Enterprise A.
- she has "a too fat neck and a too small bottom." Her secondary hull should be about 1/4 longer and 1/4 thicker to visually fit with rest of the ship.

Other than that, she's a pretty lass.

There are certain angles that don't look right. But then the "camera" catches it on one of the classic shots and its spot on.

There are things I like about it. I like the engines better than any version since TOS, and there are ways in which it's a little sleeker than previous versions of the ship. That said, I loathe the rescaling of the thing - partly because they retained every cue that was used for visually scaling the previous ships, and simply enlarged all of that - and I only like aspects of the interior design.

...but seriously, in action, it is apparent what ILM was going for. You can see the surface detailing and lighting detail on the nacelles, as well at the actuating rear intercooler (TOS nomenclature) "flares" and other moving components.

Knowing the new scale of the ship at over 750m long, the nacelles make more sense.

There's a problem with the whole ship being '750m long'.

Watch the film again and you can see the ship above Kirk when he goes to the ship yard. No way is that ship Galaxy class size or bigger. Also, when we see the Ent in space for the first time and the shuttle docks. Again, no way is it that big.

Slightly bigger than the Original/Refit yes.

I don't care what the designers say. What's on screen says a competley different story.

Btw, i was not attacking you. Sorry if my post comes off like that.

No offense taken- we're here to have fun ;)

Here's another thread dedicated to the nuEnt size issue-

The diagram here is purportedly from Bad Robot, the production company for the movie-

Yes, the Galactica is the wrong size, so BSG geeks please restrain yourselves ;)

:techman: aces mate

You know why i have a problem with their scaling? seeing the ship in film. In every shot, when we see the shuttles near the Ent, and see people under the ship in construction, it does not look that big. It looks Refit/original size.

Dude, i hated at first, but that cos it was so different to what we were used to.

that first pic didnt do anything to justify it, their best bet wouldve been to release the renders by the actual designers. they look a helluva lot better than the leaked one we got.

It looked out of proportion, top heavy, and shit.

But when i saw these wallpapers rendered by the actualy designers:

Especially this one, its my fave.

I thought, ok, maybe its ok, looks ok to me, not too bad.

then i saw it in action. When that ship moves, its graceful. Its obviously designed to be moving. When its still it doesnt do it justice. When its moving its fantastic, its flawless, perfect looking.

Still not perfect, but hey, its what we got.

Well I like nuEnterprise better than TOS Enterprise, and I would say it's a tie between nuEnterprise and Refit Enterprise A.

I still like the Galaxy and Refit 3 nacelled GalaxyX more though, sorry guys :(

Well, when I first saw the leaked shots of the new Enterprise, I was 50/50 with it, undecided if I liked it or hated it.

Keep in mind my favorite Trek ship is the Refit Galaxy Class from "AGT" (yes people, the one with the phaser cannon and 3 nacelles  ) followed very closely by the regular Galaxy class (in turn followed closely in a tie between Excelsior and Refit Constitution class :) )

I just saw the movie yesterday, and well, the ship design won me over. Watching it fly around with those huge ass nacelles just looks......right for some reason :techman:

And I've been reading the thread about the ship sizes, and well, if it's bigger than a Galaxy class ship I can accept that. We know bigger doesn't always mean better or more powerful.

I did not care for it at first either. Especially those huge honking warp nacelles. Now it's on my desktop right now. It grows on you. :techman:
ONE OF US! :D ONE OF US!

the new Enterprise design & phaser new design detail

June 2009 issue of American Cinematographer about the design of the Enterprise Production Designer Scott Chambliss mentions,
"...in favor of 'designers who were interested in futurism and future technology, such as Eero Saarinen....started applying the curvature of Saarinen's architecture to the main structural elements.'"

also the Enterprise bridge is now oval-shaped (if you hadn't noticed).

the prop master Russell Bobbit showed the magazine the new phasers:
"the updated firearm still boasts both 'stun' and 'kill' settings; now, however, the two settings are visually differentiated with the press of a thumb switch that physically flips the barrel 180 degrees."
check back for June issue on the Internet around June 15
