I must be crazy, I actually like the new Enterprise design

GalaxyX

Rear Admiral
Well, when I first saw the leaked shots of the new Enterprise, I was 50/50 with it, undecided if I liked it or hated it.

Keep in mind my favorite Trek ship is the Refit Galaxy Class from "AGT" (yes people, the one with the phaser cannon and 3 nacelles  ) followed very closely by the regular Galaxy class (in turn followed closely in a tie between Excelsior and Refit Constitution class :) )

I just saw the movie yesterday, and well, the ship design won me over. Watching it fly around with those huge ass nacelles just looks......right for some reason :techman:

And I've been reading the thread about the ship sizes, and well, if it's bigger than a Galaxy class ship I can accept that. We know bigger doesn't always mean better or more powerful.

I did not care for it at first either. Especially those huge honking warp nacelles. Now it's on my desktop right now. It grows on you. :techman:

(Although the warp nacelles still are kind of fugly.) :p

I thought it looked a bit daft and unbalanced from side-on pictures at first, but the way it is photographed in the movie makes the nacelles look really good. I think it's a great update of the design - the fact that the saucer is unchanged is nothing short of astounding. (don't talk to me about the font or the detail lines or the slight colour change :P)

I like it. It looks more...I dunno...angry than the past incarnations. I know that Enterprise is a Science vessel...but we are seeing a new time line develop so you never know. Maybe a pissed off Enterprise is what will be needed :D

I thought I would hate it - never liked the TOS ship, and tolerated the refit.

But it is such a beautiful ship - and while I don't like the size of the new nacelles the basic design managed, I think to add a significantly new, "modern" dimension to the ship without looking ridiculously out of place. (And they give the ship the power it needs for that kickarse new warp effect)

The only thing I didn't like was engineering. I like a good ol' fashioned blue-glowing warpcore.

I must confess:

My previous Fav Starship design to date had been the Refit 1701 Enterprise - however, I'm pleased to announce that the titleholder has been knocked off the throne by the NuPrise!!!

:) JJ Abrams - your Enterprise design now reigns supreme in my world!!!!

:bolian:

My Fav starships:

1) NuPrise
2) Refit Enterprise (TMP)
3) Enterprise-D
4) NX-2000 Excelsior

Them's my picks!!!!

moi aussi (bid to boost foreign box office by using a different language there :techman:).

Also i guess we can say that in this new timeline, they had encountered Nero and that affected the future design of the Enterprise, it probably has more offensive enhancements than it would have had so more complex and consequently larger.

I too was initially ambivalent about the nu1701, until seeing it in action twice in Imax (the real thing, not the fake "Imax" at megaplexes).

I guess you need to have a penchant for voluptuous women to appreciate the new Enterprise ;)

After all, this baby's got back :D Those wide, round, curvaceous nacelles are ripe for...oh, wrong forum :)

...but seriously, in action, it is apparent what ILM was going for. You can see the surface detailing and lighting detail on the nacelles, as well at the actuating rear intercooler (TOS nomenclature) "flares" and other moving components.

Knowing the new scale of the ship at over 750m long, the nacelles make more sense.

I've grown to like it as well. When I first saw it, I was thinking WTF?

It works in the context of the movie...

There's a problem with the whole ship being '750m long'.

Watch the film again and you can see the ship above Kirk when he goes to the ship yard. No way is that ship Galaxy class size or bigger. Also, when we see the Ent in space for the first time and the shuttle docks. Again, no way is it that big.

Slightly bigger than the Original/Refit yes.

I don't care what the designers say. What's on screen says a competley different story.

Btw, i was not attacking you. Sorry if my post comes off like that.

The new Big E is indeed fantastic to behold. I'll probably break my long absence of building Trek models and purchase a kit when it becomes available.

She looks great onscreen. I too was unsure of the look until I saw her in action. Even standing still she looks like she's moving. I think they nailed the design perfectly.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is the first photo they released. Now I see that it just didn't do her any justice!

I love it. My list now stands at:

1) Enterprise
2) old Equinox
3) old Vulcan Cruiser
4) old Voyager
5) old Excelsior Class (pre-refit)
6) old Enterprise-D (model, not the cgi)
7) old Wells Class

abso-freaking-lutlety.

The first photo released looked terrible IMO. The sense of disapointment i had was horrible. But, since then, I've been mightely impressed.

Can't wait for the sequel. I want to see the Kirk/Enterprise relationship in the next movie. As in, show how much the ship means to him.

No offense taken- we're here to have fun ;)

Here's another thread dedicated to the nuEnt size issue-

The diagram here is purportedly from Bad Robot, the production company for the movie-

Yes, the Galactica is the wrong size, so BSG geeks please restrain yourselves ;)
