I miss Stargate

I find watching re-runs usually tide me over. Strangely enough, even though I've seen some SG-1 episodes countless times over the past ten years (or nearly ten, I didn't start watching the show until 2003) I never get tired of it.

I've also tried a few of Fandemonium's novels, though I warn you, those books are very hit and miss. More so miss, out of the handful I've read there's maybe two or three that didn't suck.

While I'd like to see new Stargate again, as long as I have re-runs I won't actually be in a position to miss Stargate.

Yes, I miss it. I realize that SG-U was a big departure from the usual episodic formula, but I welcomed the change of pace. It didn't mean that Stargate would never return to the old ways. It was just a different story using the same foundation. But no... so many Stargate fans couldn't warm up to it and so ratings were sub par. They bitched and moaned about bringing back SG-1. Well... now the whole franchise is dead. It would've been better to have gone along with SG-U and given it a chance (heck, most new series need a few seasons to get their footing)... and then down the road, maybe we'd see an SG-2 with new characters, as let's face it--the old crew was just getting a bit long in the tooth.

I had no objection to them wanting to try something different. Unfortunately, SGU just wasn't that good. And really, I was more enthralled with SG-1 and Atlantis in their second seasons than I was with SGU.

Strictly, IMO, of coruse.

I'm disappointed at how completely Ben Browder and Joe Flanigan have vanished from TV. :( And Christopher Judge! I always had the feeling he could really shine if given a role with more range than Teal'c.

I liked the idea of SGU breaking the old Stargate mold. But to do it right would have required new people behind the camera - new writers and producers. Aping nuBSG isn't as easy as it looks...

I keep seeing an ad on the side of my Facebook page that says that Ben Browder is going to be starring in a new TV show. I don't remember the name of it. He's also going to be in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who!

I have most of SG-1 and Atlantis on DVD so I can watch those whenever I want. However I do wish there was some new Stargate to watch. I was never a rabid Stargate fan, but I miss a good old school sci-fi action/adventure show being on TV. To me, the Stargate concept still has a lot of life left in it.

I agree that SG-1 was a bit more together in its 2nd season than SG-U, but I still saw a lot of potential with SG-U. I felt like the jump to the next galaxy opened up a chance to shift out of the darkness... SG-U was a bit more dark than I liked, but could see that as just the "early" phase of the series. In the 3rd season, Destiny would make contact with friendlier aliens that they could cooperate with and share technology. There would still be challenges, but the dark edginess wouldn't be so predominant.

Miss orig SG too (pre-Browder). But Sanctuary keeps me happy, not only for obvious reason but a lot of same tropes and SG cast pop up. And it's closest thing I've seen recently to SG's popcorn/bubblegum-tongue-in-cheek-SF. When did tv execs forget to have fun?

I'd probably be able to enjoy Sanctuary more were it not for that shockingly bad accent that Amanda Tapping does. I wouldn't mind if it was just an amalgamation of British and American/Canadian, that would be believable given how old she is, but it isn't even consistent, it's all over the place.

It was my understanding that was Amanda Tapping's natural accent coming back (no longer fighting to portray an American accent and allowing her natural accent to return?)

Na, she was born in England, but moved to Canada when she was three years old. She definitely doesn't have an English accent in real life, though she's probably at least picked some stuff up from her parents.
