I loved the Yorktown base and a few other things.

I really loved the overall look of the Yorktown base. Yeah it did make one think of an uber huge snowglobe in the middle of space. But it was beautiful.

I liked it.

Also seeing the interiors it made me think of the Citadel from Mass Effect as did all the drone soldiers and such, they looked like the Collectors. I'm wondering if that was some kind of homage.

It was amazing. The best visuals I've seen in a film in a good while. The introduction to it where the camera was panning around it where it twisted around ending up at ground level was outstanding.

Wasn't it?

I wanted to see more of it and hope we see it in another movie. But its location. I have to ask why they put it smack bang on the border of uncharted space near a nebula? Can't it be moved?

I think if 4 gets made they'll probably move on to something else, and as much as I loved the Yorktown, it would probably be the right decision. There's nothing stopping them coming up with something equally amazing for the next film.

Having a massive base placed far away makes that area subject to your influence- it becomes a hub from which you extend further from.

I loved the starships being visible beneath the rivers. That was an amazing visual.

It's the complexity and detail of it all that blew me away. Other stuff in these kind of films like the mushroom dock, death star etc were just... big. This was just something else, and it was rendered beautifully. I forgot about the starships under the rivers. Just wow. 24th November can't come soon enough.

Not sure whether it's a deliberate homage, but you're not the only one who had the impression it might be. See this thread from July, shortly after the movie came out:

One of those 360 phone things would have been awesome, seeing aliens walking past going about their day and looking up to see the station's arms above.

Or they could've produced a VR game based on the station. Would beat that crappy bridge simulator.

Thank you for those links. I just read the first thread and my feelings haven't changed. I love the Yorktown.

I hope they keep that and use it in future movies.

By the way did anyone catch that line about the Franklin being an old ship and that they built those in space which to me brings things back to the very first movie where the Enterprise is built on Earth as it's a "new ship" design. Plus there was another starship sitting on gantries right above where all the cadets were leaving for the academy.

Yeah, I liked that. It kinda hinted that the tech on the Kelvin timeline was ahead of Prime, where they still primarily build ships in space.

That was the Enterprise again at the Riverside shipyard when Kirk and company leave for the academy.

Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had wondered..... When Kirk first sees it it looked lower to the ground but when they are leaving it's sitting on top of huge gantries.

The movies are so few and far between, I doubt we'll see Yorktown again on the big screen.

Now, if they do a TV series in the same era, it would be a great thing to see the a few times a season.

Not only beautiful but the music in that scene of Enterprise docking & the fly overs of the various areas was some of the most beautiful pieces of Trek music I've heard. Right up there with the First Contact opening theme that was also used for ZC meeting the Vulcans.

Would love a Kelvin Timeline series because there really is a lot of interesting stories to be told. Not gonna hold my breath.

One thing that has got me in the new movies is the music. I love that new main theme they have created. It's very sweeping and grand and creates a mood of anticipation.
