I love the USS Discovery

Well I used to get my model kits from Wal-Mart when I was a kid.. And it steadily shrank down to a token, then to nothing.. ( Kind of like Michaels, was decent, now its just a token with some paint.. About the same with Hobby Lobby, they were Great in the early 00's and then shrank down to not much.. was great with that 40% off coupon! ..
Now there's only hobby shops and online.. and thats hit or miss on price's.. Went to one hobby shop the other day, recently opened, had a decent selection but the prices on Everything was "Are you freaking kidding me, Really?" Prices.. I mean something that should be 30-35$ being $55.. or something at most 40, being over 50.. needless to say, I walked out without buying anything..
Amazon is a hit or miss, sometimes its a great deal, other times its like.. Your out of your ever loving gourd! Evilbay is about the same.. deals to be had, but somethat make you want to have a whiskey and 2 bullets..

For me, its go to a reliable site, sometimes the company's page, and research how much there' suppose to sell for, and then go a searching.. and not to fall for captain insano prices from price fixing ass's

For the USofA Its kind of looked at as "Playing with Toys".. In Europe its a bit better, more seen as an artist, and in Japan your treated as a god from on high So yeah, not so much fevor, and todays kids with there nano second attention spans make it even worse.

Not surprising. If you ever get the chance watch Toy Stories with James May and they did a story about Airfix models and trying to get kids interested in that, and they did it by upscaling a model plane to normal size but some of the kids reactions, well it says a lot.

They were enthusiastic but not so much that they were being filmed for a TV show or whatnot. Just you could read under the surface.

When it was first announced I utterly despised the design for Discovery. I like the show version a lot better, I find it has some nice lines and the spinning saucer/ring section is a fun albeit a bit goofy gimmick for the ship. While far from being my favorite mechanical design it has grown on me quite a bit since its debut. If somebody is interested in a physical model of this ship the Hallmark ornament from last year makes a decent pre-painted model.

It's got about two nice angles. The rest, it's butt ugly. Especially looking head on from the front or rear. That's not the definition of a beautiful design, and putting the 1701 next to it (even a horrible Eaves version of it) did the Discovery NO favours.

And I wonder if the producers know it, because they seem terrified of showing it flying through space for more than 2 seconds at a time.

That makes it a nice departure from other Eaves' designs.

For an Eaves design it's remarkably low on pointless details. He's got his typical useless cutouts and pointy angular nacelles in though

I'll have to admit I didn't like the Discovery when it was first introduced, as it seemed too bottom-heavy for me. But over two years, it has really grown on me, even though it's still not my favorite design. But then again, I'm absolutely in love with the Defiant class, even though it's a flying brick. I think the point is that hero ships tend to grow on me as I see more and more of them.

But overall, I like the interiors more than the exterior. I find the design aesthetics and the blue-and-gold color scheme really easy on the eyes, especially Pike's ready room which seems like a really comfortable place to work in, the spacious bridge with the aforementioned color scheme, and the huge hangar deck/cargo hold with the Starfleet Command logo on the floor.

As for the hangar door, it never really bothered me, but I'd find it absolutely hilarious if Season 3 addressed it by treating us to a lovely shot of it being blown off by enemy weapons, and flying into the camera as an action movie-like transition cut. Then cut to the bridge and Owo reports "We've lost the hangar door!"

The design has a retro feel that I like very much. The fact that looks like a very refined version of the "Planet of the Titans" Enterprise concept makes it look like it could have been designed in the 60s or 70s. And I really like the long nacelles.

Has the shuttle bay ever been shown closed? It doesn't really look like there's even room for a door.

it's always closed in season 1 unless there's traffic in and out of the shuttlebay. it's only closed in one shot in season 2 that i know of, in "brother":

I think the USS Discovery is my favourite ship design in this series.

I do agree: merchandising for the show is almost completely non-existent in my part of the world.

I just got my Polar Lights Discovery in the post today from CultTVman.

Nice model I'm just going to spray it similar colours to the show and not fuss too much with the decals. I hate decals. I just want it as a desk ornament.

I don't know if you can find a place to chrome plate it like those old 3 piece Enterprise sets, but Testors has a Metalizer line of paints that ends up looking like burnished metal.

Man, that shot really shows how beautiful the Crossfield is.
What I like about those long nacelles is exactly what made the original Connie so impressive. And it looks very functional, for some reason.

Its kind of a bronze color.. not to much in that color out there, might be some Mr. Metal Color paint.. Ended up painting mine Alclad Copper, turned out nice, but a touch to gold, owell, the only bronze paint I have access to is Tamiya, and there metalics suck..

When Star Trek 2009 came out the DVD I had came with a model of the ship which also functioned as a DVD case, the two disks hide inside the saucer. You had to put this together and it had a neat stand so what I did was assemble it and I sprayed the whole model gold and it looked rather sweet when the paint settled into the plastic like a gold / coppery kind of finish.

OK I finally got around to opening my Polar Lights USS Discovery, man this kit is the shit.

No it's the literal shit. Parts don't fit together and tons of flash on the edges that I had to file off and parts that just didn't fit together...... Bummed out now and looking for something preassembled.
