Ok so the thread title is borrowed but its good.

Stolen in 1974, recovered in 2009

I remember reading about this a few months ago; it's great that they were able to get it back. It sucks that the insurance company wouldn't just give it to them-- it would have been a great photo op for them. Now they just look like the idiots they are.

Hopefully this will become a treasured family heirloom.

Apparently the company who restored it, presumably at considerable cost & effort, had no idea the van had been stolen. The cops are calling them a victim as well.

What's the situation when that happens, do you just lose it and tough luck?

Annoying that the original owners didn't just get it back, but makes sense, as the insurance company paid them for it years ago, so they essentially sold their claim to it at that point. Doesn't happen a lot that the insurance company actually ends up getting the item they pay out for...

Haven't actually read the linked story, but I get the gist of the story from the thread replies.

I remember seeing one of those fly-on-the-wall docus following the police where they had to confiscate a car had been sold on, because it was stolen property. From memory, I think the voiceover explained that the new owners (also innocent victims in the situation) had no claim against the car itself, but could pursue a civil claim for damages against the fradulent/criminal seller if they wished to. Their regular car insurance didn't cover it (and to be honest, you couldn't expect it to).
