"I like the new movie better..."

Actually, as the father of an ADHD child, I can tell you the apple didn't fall far from the tree. I was constantly in trouble for not paying attention in class. My parents were told I was "restless" and "off task." My parents told 'em I was a kid, and to leave me the hell alone. I got through high school fine.

My son's second grade teacher told me that he needed to be put on ritalin, that he was ADHD, that he was always on another planet instead of concentrating on what was important. I withdrew him from her class, put him in a private school and told his new administrator and teacher, "He's a kid. Deal with him." He'd get in trouble from time to time (didn't have his materials, or his locker clean enough, or his shirttail out). He got through high school fine.

Sadly, this isn't true for all ADHD kids, but all the "increases" in ADHD kids are simply folks applying a new label to a condition that's been around forever...

And who the hell brought up merchandising?

Someone trying to invent some metric by which to measure the film as less than fantastically successful?

Yeah. The film made 385 million in ticket sales, sold 5.7 million DVDs, 1 million blue rays, had generally universally rave reviews and won a fucking Oscar...but no...since it didn't sell enough t-shirts it's an epic failure and killed the franchise.

I wouldn't qualify the film as a failure commercially.

It failed me personally. I could expound on why but obviously, it's a personal take and since personal takes are usually attacked or not understood to be personal here, it's a wonder anybody does post a negative view of this film Abrams hath wrought.

I still like TWOK more than TREK '09, but last year's movie was the first time since I was a child that a Star Trek movie felt like an epic event and not---as some of you so eloquently put it---an expanded two-hour episode of one of the TV shows.

Exactly so.

I'm not sure on any given day whether Abrams's movie is my favorite Trek movie or my second favorite. Depends on my mood.

If this movie killed anything it was because the poor beast was halt, lame and wandering lost from the herd. 'Twere a mercy.

But you see, it's OK that the film failed you personally. That's a feeling I can completely sympathize with. For me, ENTERPRISE failed me personally because I though it was a poorly-conceived concept that I personally didn't think was a believable TOS prequel.

The difference here is, I don't constantly berate others for liking ENTERPRISE just because I didn't, years after the fact. I don't go around constantly calling ENT a heaping pile of shit. I don't endlessly nitpick stupid little things about ENT that don't really matter anyway. And honestly, between the regime change at UPN and the change of writers and producers, I truly feel that if ENTERPRISE was given seasons 5-7, it would have been a much better show. The same goes for this new movie franchise. If you didn't like Star Trek '09, wait for Star Trek '12, and then see how you feel about the state of Trek.

I'll be waiting until I can rent XII in '12. As Scotty once said, Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Coming from someone who NEVER paid attion in class, had poor grades,... AND is more than likely would be diagnosed w/ ADHD (or whatever the HELL you wanna call it) I would have preferred the MOVIE to have followed what I grew up with since I grew up with. I mean any show or movie Shou;d at least "FEEL" like I felt when I watched "Where No Man Has Gone Before". This was like Lets go where we have already been...

There's a big difference between "I didn't like it" and "it's a failure."

I dunno, maybe the fact that there was no such thing as Star Trek until I was twelve or thirteen makes me feel less controlling of it - it's not quite something "I grew up with..." just almost.

Well That is just too bad. Maybe you can nitpick the Twilight Zone or maybe even the Outer Limits...;)
Oh I forget they never succeeded on the Big Screen...

I guess some people just have no sense of humor when it comes to dissing TOS.;)
I get the attempt at humour...only it doesn't work.
It just doesn't work on you because it comes at the expense of your hallowed ground.

Which reminds me.. Why are you here?

For someone who has gone over and beyond in expressing your lack of interest of any Trek related material post 1979, you do spend a lot of time talking about this new film and berating people who enjoyed it.

You people get tiresome. You make these generalized statements based on nothing but assumptions of someone you know nothing of. And where have I berated anyone? I may call the film trash and many other things, but where have I berated anyone except when they start in on me personally?

If I call the a film shallow and juvenile that isn't the same thing as calling anyone who likes said film shallow and juvenile. It might be taken that way, but it isn't what I've said.

And many around here say some of the shittiest things about what I've liked and I hardly ever say a word about it.

The Big Bang Theory is so hilariously on the ball.

This whole debate is and always has been subjective. Many people dislike remakes and reboots but I really liked the first remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I enjoyed Cruise's War of the Worlds, I prefer the remake of Solaris because it conveys more emotion and is a LOT shorter, and I loved NuBSG. I love TMP but I'm not really a fan 2001 - I preferred 2010, which most people view as vastly inferior.

I agree with whoever said that STXI is as good as an average episode of TOS, nowhere near as good as the dozen or so good episodes, and better than the dozen or so bad episodes. They still have a chance to make the next one as good as a good episode.

Some young'uns today may suffer from a touch of ADD.

"You People" "Young 'uns with ADD" and that's just in this thread. And way to deflect from the question I asked you: Why are you here?
Certainly going on and on about something you don't like in one of many threads discussing the film and commenting on how much you hate it for the "benefit" of people who have something positive to say about it betrays your ever-so innocent intentions. It might not be exactly what you say, but your motives for posting here and in all the other threads that even remotely mention the new film is pretty obvious to nearly everyone who posts here. You're not fooling a soul with your claims of intent and you know it. Don't continue to insult our intelligence with this nonsense. And don't pretend it isn't nonsense.

As for my contribution to this thread:

I liked this film. It certainly holds its own with the rest of them and many of my friends who are sci-fi fans and don't have ADD nor are so easily impressed by explosions and shiny images feel that this film was one of the best of the franchise.

We had movies like that. We had TV series like that. All together, we've had about 750 hours of Star Trek like that. It wasn't working anymore.
