I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in TVH?

It was just on tv. What the hell was that about? Can anyone recap the opinions, post their opinions, or point me to the thread of opinions?

It’s just ... very strange.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I always thought it was past and future colliding. Since many of the things we witness in the "acid trip" as you call it, are things said later in the film.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

It's supposed to be a sort of abstract interpretation of the crew's experiences during time travel.

I think Nimoy mentions in the commentary that he didn't think it turned out as well as it could have.

It's an ambitious task to try to portray something like that on screen.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I saw TVH again only recently, and it felt like an excuse to show off some CG to me, as harsh as that sounds. It was just weird.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I wonder how that scene would play if one were "stoned off his ass" as it were?

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

Sonak pretty much hit it on the head. Nimoy was dissatisfied with the final outcome and if it had been done today (or relative when he recorded the commentary track) he would have found a different way to show that scene. It was a really ambitious and esoteric sequence even for a Star Trek film. I think his biggest disappointment with it was that it was missing something but he had trouble saying exactly what.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I call the dummy drop the WTF scene in STIV:TVH. There's one in every Classic Trek film.

1) The V'ger cloud fly-through.
2) Khan---khan---khan!
3) Those huge LIPS. I saw that on an 80' screen on the front row. OMG!!!
4) The flaming dummy drop.
5) The barrier at the center of the galaxy, and the microbiology trip to its innards, and of course, the giant head of Zardoz at the end...
6) All the racist remarks made by our heroes. I couldn't believe guys like TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD's Brock Peters made a reference to Klingon trash...

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

^ I think a lot of the racist remarks in TUC are out of place for the characters we know and love too. But do we really know about Admiral Cartwright? I mean, he could be a bigot through and through. We only saw him twice. And Brock Peters is an actor. And a damn good one at that. Just because he himself is not a bigot, and finds such sentiments detestable, doesn't mean he can't give a good performance as such a character.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I'll add my agreement to the out-of-character nature of the racist remarks in TUC. It's been brought up before, but often defended as "well, the crew's been fighting Klingons for so long." There's no reason for a Cold War with a political entity to bigotry toward a group.

Moreover, this bigotry came out of NOWHERE all so it could serve as an important lesson without regard to the character sabotage it did.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

It was a bit of a sudden turnaround after the happy Klingon/Enterprise crew get-together at the end of STV. But... Klingons did kill Kirk's son, and during TOS, Kor tried to, and thought he'd succeeded in (until the reveal at the end) killing hundreds and hundreds of innocent and unarmed Organians. Anyway, at the end of STVI the crew all learned their lessons and made peace. Isn't that the Star Trek message?

Back on-topic, that time travel scene was weird. Maybe all the crews see similar batshit crazy stuff whenever they travel through time, but none of them have the guts to admit to it for fear of being institutionalized.:p

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I think the intent of the scene was that the entire crew did see flashes of their life before them during the travel back through to the past. Nimoy though limited to budget and time restraints just chose to show us what Kirk saw. All of them had their eyes closed and acted as they had some kind of surreal experience as Kirk did. I often wondered what did Spock see since he just died and came back to life :) His vision must have been the trippiest.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I have probably seen this film twenty times since 1986 and not until this moment, reading the above did it EVER cross my mind it was something only Kirk saw.

I just assumed it was a metaphysical and esoteric way of showing time travel.

Nothing to do with what Kirk only sees!

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

Sulu must have had an intense vision because IIRC he actually shakes it off lol.

Re: I know it’s been asked, but what’s up with Kirk’s “acid trip” in T

I thought Kirk had to shake him slightly to wake him up.

Could someone please enlighten me?
