I knew it!

Given all the steps involved in putting something like this together, a release date a long time away is inevitable- honestly I'd be amazed if any movie hit theaters prior to Autumn 2011 at earliest. (Or, to put it another way, after two full series of nothing but Matt Smith as the Doctor.) The new Star Trek movie started development sometime in 2005, after all, and while a Who movie probably wouldn't be anywhere near as elaborate a production as that, a similar timeframe isn't out of the question.

And something similar could happen to a Doctor Who movie. But even if you don't count that delay as part of the production cycle, that's still three years or more between the earliest planning and the finished movie. Obviously at least some work has already been done on this Who project, but there's no way to know how much, or how long it's been more than an idle thought. This film would be a new kind of production for most or all parties involved; these things take a lot of time.
