I just watched "Ghost in the Machine," and now I'm sad

I never watched Season 5 of Atlantis on TV when it first aired, so now I'm playing catch-up with the DVDs that came out yesterday. I just got done watching "Ghost in the Machine," and now I'm sad. I always thought it was a mistake to get rid of Dr. Weir. Even though she wasn't always the most useful character in the show, I always thought she served a greater function as the heart and soul of Atlantis.

This episode reminded me how much I missed having her around, and it was that much worse because she wasn't even played by the same actress. While I thought the Replicator Weir from this episode did a good job, I would have loved to see Torri play the role one more time.

Torri told the writers to fuck off so she wans't ever coming back to anything done by the Stargate people.

Uh-huh, and? From what I heard, they fired her but still wanted her to be available for possible recurring appearances. She made the right call.

I agree, she made the right choice. If the Atlantis PTB had any real brains, they never would have gotten rid of her in the first place.

Elizabeth laid down her life to save Atlantis, not once, but three times ("Before I Sleep", "Lifeline" and "Ghost In The Machine"). Much as I hated to see closure brought to the character, that was (IMO) the only way to close the book on her.

They fired her for no reason and without much warning. They then came out with an idea to have her character back in an arc, and she told them to fuck off and she was done with the show.

Well it seems some people didn't understand my very simple English the first time.

Maybe I... should... type... slower.....

I understood exactly what you said the first time. And then again the second time.

What I don't understand is the point you're trying to make with what you're saying.

Okay, I admit I haven't had my coffee yet this morning, but who didn't understand you? I don't see any place where there might have been misunderstanding. I certainly understood you.

Was that before or after she came back and did an episode?

The writers never had any idea what to do with the Weir character. It's the same as what happened with the Landry character.

The episodes are supposed to be exploring, travelling to planets and meeting people. That doesn't leave alot for the base commander to do. When Don S. Davis as Hammond stayed behind and was in maybe five to ten minutes per episode it worked.

Unfortunately, Weir never grew as a character and was shoved aside to accommodate Amanda Tapping.

Weir never really worked as a character in the aftermath of the first season. She made several inexcusable command decisions, but was left in charge to serve mantaining the status quo. Then, out of nowhere, she was awkwardly let go to shake things up. But then the writers decided, no, they wanted to bring her back. It's no surprise the actress left without looking back after all that.
