I hope for more traditional space battles

It's hysterical that people think it's worthwhile to nitpick and critique a movie made four years ago that's completely reinvigorated a dead franchise like Star Trek.

Maybe it's because having a franchise alive is not the be-all-end-all if it's become something so far removed from what fans fell in love with in the first place.

And besides, what's more absurd, the people who see fit to spend their time bashing JJ Trek or people like you who are its tireless defenders? I see no difference, really, unless you feel that the box-office receipts nullify anyone's opinion of the film's quality, which is a rather shallow argument to make.

Fans are not a monolithic group, we have a variety of opinions about this film and the films and series that proceeded it. The difference between the "tireless defenders" and the "bashers" is often in the way their arguments are presented.

It's hysterical people have different opinions. Absolutely hysterical. Let's all laugh at those people.

Dribble. Dribble.

Drool. Drool.

Dribble.

BOOM!

Eh. How about let's not?

And let's particularly make an effort to stay away from making things personal, shall we? (I believe I may have mentioned that to you before.)

I'm a fan. I love the old stuff. I loved the 2009 movie a great deal and I'm looking forward to the new movie. There are plenty of folks like me who feel the same way.

I didn't love the 2009 film, it had too many 'WTF?' moments, but I did like it. But if I excluded all the Trek that had too many 'WTF?' moments, there'd be about six episodes I could watch.

It's also shallow to say that you hold to keys to what is and is not relevant.

It made money. People liked it. It made new fans. It brought Star Trek back. There are a astrometric shit-ton of reasons as to why it was "good."

As to why it was "bad", those reasons are all subjective. You don't like shaky cam. Fine. You don't like lens flare. Fine. You don't like the motives behind the bad guy. Fine, Trek was never Shakespeare so I don't really know what you wanted. The suits liked it enough to give a green-light another two movies. Their opinions are really the only ones who matter.

It didn't force all your DVDs to melt to there is still old Star Trek. Since there was no chance in hell old Trek was ever going to continue, that's as good as you were ever going to get.

J.J. Abrams broke into my house the other night and demanded that I turn over my Trek DVD's/Blu-ray's. Thankfully, LeVar Burton was there to fight him off!

Who said that? Where? when? Are you just plucking things out of thin air now to criticize?

It didn't force his opinions to melt either so what's the problem?

If we are going to talk about hilarity how about how hilarious it is that a person goes around a BBS board all day speaking over others as if they had some sort of authority just because they once had a connection to it 20 years ago.

I guess we all need to cling to something.

I didn't know Squiggy worked on Star Trek? I thought that was another poster...

Well I won't name names because that would make it personal you know? Let's just call him/her/them Star Trek fan(s) and laugh at him/her/them because that's ok around here as long as it's not directed at anyone, just in general.
Like laughing at old people. See, that's fine.

I think there's a point though where people take things a bit too far. They're the "Holy Defenders of Canon" and act like anyone with a differing viewpoint is a lesser fan.

That's where those folks get into trouble at. I've been told that I'm not a fan in other threads because I think J.J. Abrams work is every bit as Trek as any other work that carries the label, even though I've been watching the show since 1975. Hell, we've got someone over in the TOS forum essentially calling people who accept Constitution-class sheep because the plaque on the wall says Starship-class.

Maybe they need to allow each individual to decide for themselves what is and isn't Trek? What is and isn't canon?

Truth be told, I'm Gates McFadden.

Yep. Some have more tolerance for differences than others. It's that simple. That's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors of ice cream and why there are so many different Protestant religions, each with different sects and synods within them. We can all choose where we're comfortable.
In my opinion, Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman, and the entire "Supreme Court" were far more beholding to canon than they had to be. Paramount probably would've let Abrams make Scotty a woman, if he had wanted to. Though at that point, they would've lost me. I mean, I have my limits, too.
