I think it's one of those sites that's being challenged, They say they have the right to redistribute the signals under the TV Without Frontiers directive, the broadcasters say otherwise. I guess it could go either way.
ITV network was broken up in to local channels, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees, Granada, STV, etc. Channel 4 has always been Channel 4 (or S4C in Wales I believe).When we lived in England, we had only the basic four BBC channels, until a neighbor got reassigned elsewhere (we lived in a base housing area... off base) and they had Sky. They gave us their satellite equipment before moving away so for the last year or so that we were there we had Sky.
There were some great shows on those BBC channels back then, though. Good times...

ITV and Channel 4 aren't BBC channels. they're independent and subsidised through advertising. BBC is subsidised through the license fee. BBC 3 and 4, as well as the News Channel, kids channels and Parliament, are only available via digital services.

I lived in England from 1991 to 1995. Our four channels were called (or at least I think they were called): BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3, and BBC 4. I was also very young at the time (six years old when we left), so while those may not have officially been the channel names, that was at the very least what my parents called them and what I remember them as.
(Actually, I just called them "Channel *insert number here*" for the most part, so you might be right. At the very least, I don't remember there being a station called ITV back then.)

BBC Three replaced BBC Choice in 2003. BBC Choice launched in 1998 and was a digital only channel, as is BBC Three.
BBC Four launched in 2002 and is also a digital only channel.

they probably called ITV 'Channel 3'. that's what would make most sense.

There's actually a lot of BBC Worldwide channels, BBC Knowledge, BBC Kids, BBC Canada, BBC HD, BBC Arabic, BBC America, BBC World News, BBC Prime, BBC Lifestyle, UK TV, Animal Planet, I think there may be more that I can't think of.

Sky is worth it, but as other posters have said everything is on at the same time. I only have it for a few channels; Sky one (Simpsons/futurama), Bravo (Star Trek nightly), Virgin one (Star Trek daily) and MTV (Jackass, Viva La Bam, Dr Steve-o, Other random junk :P )
I used to think it was worth it, until I figured out I only really watched 5 shows, and everyone of them I bought on DVD anyway that I decided to get rid of it, and I can't say I've missed it, and if anything there's too much to watch on Freeview never mind Sky.
I've only got ten since the digital change in the States, and we only get half in good weather. And really, one is a looping weather map...
But we had cable for a week in the hospital, and there still was nothing to watch.
I mean, you can get most good stuff online that you miss, even the premium channels were full of fluff.

It's the old joke isn't it. Hundreds of channels and nothing to watch. The problem with cable/multichannel tv is that almost all of it is repeats, so at some point you catch up with it, and it's no longer worth watching.
Oh well! 4 channels aren't that bad. At least I get to watch ST Nemesis NOW! Is that good or bad
