I hate to call attention to this...

... But every once in a while, when I come onto this site, there an ad that pops up every so often of one of those animal cruelty prevention organizations. The picture they have on there is a dog with a cut on his snout.
You know, I'm a big animal lover, and I think ads that show that kind of thing are simply heartbreaking, but I'm in a quandary over whether it's appropriate to call attention to such a thing by showing such images.
Is it meant to be a genuine cry for help? Or is the organization simply trying to wrangle you into coughing up cash?

The purpose of advertising is to wrangle you into coughing up cash. They show animals that have been hurt so that it won't be just an abstract concept, so that people will get a clue that animals are really suffering; what they show in those ads is very, very mild compared to what is done to animals in real life.

It is both a cry for help and an attempt to wrangle cash, since it is the cash that will help. Wrangling cash out of you is their job.

I think it is perfectly appropriate, and as RJ points out, much much worse happens to pets in reality.

Oh yeah. It's sad to see. :(

You're in a quandary as to whether it's appropriate to draw attention to animal cruelty by showing pictures of animals who have been the victims of...animal cruelty? It would seem to be perfectly appropriate, and in terms of catching the attention of potential donors, pretty much necessary.

Well, if the link led me to a site where I could look at hot nude chicks, I might actually give them some money. I'm not going to pay to look at pictures of bleeding wildlife.

Um, you don't pay to look at the pictures. You pay to help stop animals from being abused. Not everything is like porn.

It's not? I wouldn't know.
