I hate Lt. McGyvers.

Perhaps Khan saw McGivers as little more than an incubator for a future clone of himself. Then, attractiveness and submissiveness would be all he needed from her.

Could be. Considering that Kahn's group was genetically engineered, I doubt they would limit themselves to natural selection. They already see themselves as above that.

Genetic engineering may be illegal by that time, but I don't see that stopping Kahn and his followers from using advanced methods to try to "enhance" any offspring they have.

Had to watch the episode last night thanks to this thread. Y'all have given me a whole new perspective on it. There's Khan trying to make a woman "open [her] heart" by crushing her fucking hand, and the woman responds by melting into a puddle of her own vaginal fluid and begging to be loved.

Yeah, no wonder my views of romance were fucked up when I was a teenager, wuith exapmles like that!

(And frankly, I never have been that crazy about Kirk as a captain anyway - too much of a loose canon for me.)

Blasphemy! Sacrilege!!!

I know, I know. Forgive me, Cakes honey. I like him as a character, meaning that I enjoy watching him (well, most of the time...), but I'm not sure I'd enjoy having him as my captain. I'm not sure I'd like me as a captain either, so don't take it personally.

I'm just kiddin Kate! I should of put a laughing face there :guffaw:
It was a 100% a joke....but it does still shock me to see that in print...that someone doesn't like Kirk for whatever reason....shocking!!! :)

^ I know. On this forum, it's kind of like saying, "Gosh, but starships are silly. And who the heck ever heard of a Vulcan anyway?"

I watched this episode just recently.

Wow.

What a glaring mistake. McGivers was not very believable. I mean seriously... I understand her idealization of prominent strong men from earlier centuries, but c'mon. Khan demands her support because he wishes to take over the ship. TAKE OVER THE SHIP. Sure, she can be infatuated, but to give into him so easily? She wasn't surprised at all... Like "What? You want to WHAT? Take over the ship??" Even if she envisioned herself leaving her commission to join him, wouldn't she prefer it to be under lawful circumstances? The possibilities were just opening. There was no need for Khan to take over this ship. After a debriefing at Starbase 12, Khan's entourage would be free to go wherever they like. And if they want to descend upon a planet and gain a foothold for possible influence and eventual takeover, so be it.

But no... she just says "OK, sure--I'll help you take over the ship". Completely unbelievable to me.

There were quite a few glaring mistakes in this episode. Ummmm... remember "Mirror, Mirror"? If someone uses the transporter, a status light flashes on the helmsman's security panel. So... what, there's usage of the transporters to send Khan over to this ship them beam his crew back over to the Enterprise, with no one knowing about it? Even still, with sensors active, certainly Scotty or some other engineering staff member would see the power surge in the Botany Bay's systems as the crew gets revived. C'mon...

And finally, in the end... Kirk seems to show this "curious respect" for Khan, giving him a chance to build a new world. I'm sorry, once a tyrant always a tyrant. What kind of "experiment" did Kirk think he'd "try out" like this? No... this was not aligned to the way Starfleet operates. And McGivers would have been courtmartialed. No two ways about it.

Yeah, between that and "I Dream of Jeannie," we were fucked.

But I'm going to express a little sympathy for Marla. C'mon, this is KHAN we're talking about.

Right? I spent years wondering why I couldn't have a different woman every week! Kirk did! James West did! Bond did!

Interesting analysis, Gary - and accurate, I'm sure, though I haven't watched this episode in ages. I do remember the transporter weirdness, now that you've mentioned it. It was just a sloppy episode in so many ways - characterization (particularly McGivers and Kirk), plot, technical stuff. Bleah.

Any episode that requires this much...contortion so that everything fits is just not going to be a good episode. At least that's how it seems to me. I have always - always - disliked it, and now I feel all validated in my dislike. ;)

I think Khan admired her for having the stones to break Kirk out of the decompression chamber. That took guts, especially for a wallflower.
