I finished Season One...does it get any better?

Does it get any better?

I guess I got spoiled by DS9, which was pretty much great out of the gate (except for Avery Brooks' performance, which needed some warming to).

Voyager? I'm trying to find a character I like. I might like Janeway as written, but Kate Mulgrew has this whole Patricia Neal/ Kate Hepburn thing going on that I find distracting. Chakotay sets my teeth on edge. Neelix had one good dark episode at least. The Paris/Kim bromance thing seems warmed over.

So far, Kes and the hologram doctor are the only ones I'd like to see more of. Well, except for Torres.

Um, I liked "Faces," anyhow.

It's got to get better, right?

Season 2 gets off to a medicore start with the first ten or so episodes ranging from bad to average. There are some better episodes later on in the season, but overall it's a weak season.

Season 3 I think is a little better, finally ditching the Kazon and Voyager encountering the Borg for the first time. Still though, there are a few weak episodes, and when you consider how great DS9 got by it's third season, Voyager just doesn't hold up.

Season 4 improves a little more, with the introduction of Seven Of Nine, a character who, despite the initial reasoning for bringing her on the show, actually turned out to be a strong character.

Seasons 5, 6 and 7 generally stays on the same level of quality as season 4, and while the series is entertaining, it never gets as good as DS9 or matches the show it copies with TNG.

Personally, I think Voyager, like all of the Trek series, took a little time to get its space legs. I think it did improve some, but I generally find it the "weakest" of the series. I did like it, though, and I think it had some really good moments. Give it a chance with an open mind.

If Kes is one of the few characters you're becoming attached to, then I think you're setting yourself up to be disappointed going forward.

I'd say that no, it doesn't really get any better. It does get different, a good different, but it's still pretty bland.

It gets much better and much worse, depending on the episodes being considered. VOY is worth seeing, and occasionally brilliant.

I just wanted to add, while Voyager isn't as high brow as TNG or character driven as DS9, It's still a fun and entertaining show.

Sure it has flaws but what Trek didn't?

What made me a Voyager fan was, it was enjoyable hour of quality family programming. It was a show that after a long day at work, going over bills, my budget and watching the depressing news, that I could turn on and forget all that crap for a few mins.

Voyager many not be great Trek but it's good enough for me.:bolian:

I just finished rewatching season 1 and feel that its actually an extremely strong season.
Maybe it is better on a rewatch (I certainly didn't love it the first time around) but the number of good-great episodes is pretty astounding especially compared to DS9's first season.
Even in episodes with dull technobabble outlines, the characterisation is excellent (I'm looking at you Parallax and The Cloud)

But seriously, how can you not love

Eye of the Needle
Prime Factors
State of Flux
Faces Jetrel

All absolutely 5* episodes.

A lot of season 2 is pretty mediocre in my opinion, there is a marked increase in interestingness in season 3 and then it reaches its best season in season 4 with the arrival of (the best character) lovely Seven of Nine and some really good stories.

I'd really like you to see you keep us updated on your progress and opinions!

P.S. Enjoy Kes while you can D:
She is indeed a very enjoyable presence on the show.

I have to admit this my feeling about VOY. I like it enough to watch in re-runs but not enough to buy the DVD's. Its a fun show to watch when there isn't anything else on. Btw, am I the only one who didn't think 7 of 9 was that hot?

Come on now, season 1 is great!

Season 2 is Voyager's best season with many great episodes.

Season 3 is very good too, but not as good as season 2 and 1.

I'd say it's pretty much exactly equal to all the other spin-offs to tell you the truth. Sometimes really good, sometimes really bad, usually alright; always better than just about anything else on television. Except for the Office. Which is ****ing hilarious. "I never smile. Showing one's teeth is a submission signal in primates. When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life."

I liked it enough to own the DVD's

...and yes, you just might be.

A conversation between my wife and I:

WIFE: I don't see what's the big deal with Seven of Nine. She doesn't have a pretty face.
ME: Guys aren't looking at her face, hon.
WIFE: !#!^%@%@! <grabs remote, changes channel>

are you kidding? voyagers first season has been the strongest since tos, that must be since the years haven't the prefix bc anymore. come on, you can't seriosly claim the jokes produced as the first seasons of tng and ent were better, and while ds9's 1th season might beat them marginally, it wasn't as good as voy's either.
well, voy's seasons two and three are a bit weaker but with enough good stuff here and there, from season 4 onwards it gets brilliant.

I wouldn't say it gets "brilliant" from season 4 onwards. Season 4 is excellent and the rest of the seasons to deliver high quality episodes, but there is also a feeling of despair in the later seasons as the lack of continuity worsens, Janeway's behaviour gets simply insane, time devoted to each character becomes uneven and there is a general lack of warmth in the whole show.
