Stop defining yourself by what you don't have, and start defining yourself by what you do have
Indeed.
From reading many of the OP's posts I know he has a love of buying DVDs and new technology(Blue-Ray and 3D tellys). I have a couple of friends like that - it's like a drug that makes them happy for a short while but then leaves them feeling empty later.
Oh but WAIT! There's a new eight disk BR edition of Avatar coming out - "That'll tell us what to do!!!!"
It's futile and leaves one feeling empty, as well as denuding one of money.
One of my friends recently broke down with me and cried(and he's 49!)and said he hated his life and was SO sad.
I on the other hand went through a period seven years ago of no employment, hardly any friends and near poverty and used the time to sort myself out mentally and emotionally, working out what I have, what I need and so on. Ironically I did not have much but further rid my life of material albatrosses by purging my house(and thus my life)of excess possessions. It left me feeling unencumbered and FREE!
I now work in a job I love(performing physio with older people)with people I respect, making a difference daily in the lives of others(that's a BIG part of happiness!)and being paid very well for it. I am careful what I buy and WHY I BUY IT. THAT is the KEY!!!
I don't just get the latest tech that some marketing guru wants me to have - I leave that for the wannabes and try hards to spend their hard earned cash on and I get it three years later for a tenth of the price and with all the bugs ironed out. I have a partner I ADORE and who LOVES me and we holiday twice a year(New Zealand, Tasmania and off to the Gold Coast next May, with a cruise planned for September 2011, a US trip planned for 2012 plus we are already in the early planning stages of doing Red Carpet Tours Hobbit Part 2 premiere jaunt in December 2013!!!).
Stop salving your life's problems with new shiny BR disks and thinking the latest CGI wankfest will make you happy. Go out and help somebody and make a difference in THEIR LIFE instead of sitting and feeling sorry for yourself.
Therein lies true happiness!
