I could have accepted Sybok if...

I wouldn't blame Trek V so much on Shat's directing. I'm not saying it couldn't have been done better. But I don't think it was the main fault. The film was fundamentally flawed at the level of story and script. Shat was involved with that part, unfortunately.

And oh, hey, Spock has . . . a brother. TERRIBLE when they do that.

Like, oh, hey . . . Dukat had an affair with Kira's mother.

Do they throw darts at character names on the wall when they're stuck for stories?

Like when character a is all of a sudden . . . in love with ________! Scotty and Uhura in TFF! Who knew?

Terrible.

Agreed.

I was 15 when I saw TFF and thought the introduction of Sybok being Spock's brother was contrived. Not that I knew the name for what they did was 'contrived' when I was 15.;)

Or when Picard had a brother all of a sudden.
Or when Riker has a father he doesn't get along with.
Or when Indiana Jones has a father he doesn't get along with.
Or when Trip has a never before mentioned sister.

I really don't get what problems people have with Sybok being Spock's half-brother he never talked about.

Do you want all characters to be introduced with a complete and final bio in the very first episode? That's not how it works.
Spock's father, mother and fiancee where introduced just like Sybok. All of a sudden, they were there. They haven't been relevant to the stories coming before, which is why they were never mentioned.

At which point in TOS or the TOS movies could it ever have been adressed that Spock has a half-brother who was born long before Sarek met Amanda?

Auntie Hill this isn't like you to be so argumentative!

100% agreed. I have no problem with Sybok not being mentioned until now. I'd go on, but the above makes the point quite succinctly.

Having said that, I do kind of have a problem with Dukat/Kira's mother, if only because I think Dukat is the kind of guy who would've rubbed Kira's face in it long before year six... ;)

And also, the show had led us to believe that Dukat was the same age as Sisko while the affair would make him at least a few decades older.

I always thought the casting of Star Trek V should have been inverted: Luckinbill should have played St. John Talbot, and David Warner should have been Sybok (he'd have been awesome).

I always thought that, too, although I do think Luckinbill did a fine job with what he had to work with and was in no way one of the film's low points.

I think the problem is the way that they incorporate and introduce the character of Sybok. It was heavyhanded and implausible...Luckinbill was fine in the role (if youre a fan, catch his turn as a straight-acting gay man in THE BOYS IN THE BAND).

Overall, Star Trek 5 is such a poorly designed film...which is a shame because it actually is quite appealing overall and has some genuinely moving moments, which is why I have a soft spot...despite its glaring inadequacies.
Definitely heavy-handed and implausible. Kind of puts a dampener on the whole movie for me... which is why I don't own it and have only seen it twice in my life.

Actually it looked very much like a Star Trek film, with most of the acting pretty good. So, Shatner wasn't a complete disaster. But yeah, the story and script was just crappy. And that whole idea of traveling to the center of the galaxy in such a short period of time was just ludicrous. "Why does God need a starship?" :guffaw:
