I could have accepted Sybok if...

Agenda

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
...he had been played by an actor of much greater standing. It's like the case with Indiana Jones' dad. Sure, anybody could have played him. But the father (or brother) of an iconic character should ideally be played by an iconic actor.

I always thought the casting of Star Trek V should have been inverted: Luckinbill should have played St. John Talbot, and David Warner should have been Sybok (he'd have been awesome).

Ironically, Sybok was originally going to be played by Indiana Jones' dad.

Damn George Lucas...

He even wanted to combine Indiana Jones with Star Trek! (This was before the prequels, before Clone Wars...before 3D Star Wars...and before Greedo shot first...! Before the monkeys in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...!)

:weep:

Where is this script online?

{Yes, that was Joel's saracasm!}

I actually rather liked Luckinbill as Sybok, but David Warner would have been spectacular. It would have given him a lot more to do in that film.

I thought Luckinbill did a great job as Sybok, I liked him. If somebody like Connery had done it, it wouldn't have felt like a Trek movie, more a Connery vehicle. (I also don't rate him that highly as an actor...)

Indiana Jones also didn't feel like a Connery vehicle. And what many people forget is that Connery would have brought more money into the production.

No, he probably would have taken more money out of the production. Big names get big money.

Yeah, but you would also get more money by having him in the movie. You see, it works both ways.

Are you talking about ticket sales?

The question becomes is the draw big enough for the expected additional expense to be covered by increased revenue?

I'm not so sure Sean Connery could have made this film any more viable. It already had a decent opening weekend... it was word of mouth that killed it.

I think the problem is the way that they incorporate and introduce the character of Sybok. It was heavyhanded and implausible...Luckinbill was fine in the role (if youre a fan, catch his turn as a straight-acting gay man in THE BOYS IN THE BAND).

Overall, Star Trek 5 is such a poorly designed film...which is a shame because it actually is quite appealing overall and has some genuinely moving moments, which is why I have a soft spot...despite its glaring inadequacies.

I agree the choice of Luckinbill was a bit startling, but I have to blame the problems with this one on the director. There was no focus to the film. Was it intended to be a comedy or serious science fiction??? Comedies can have dramatic moments (The TV series M*A*S*H proved that was possible) but this movie strattled the fence and never took a side. It never used the elements of the opposite for dramatic effect/comic relief.

Pacing was also slow and irregular. Tension was not built properly.

Writing needed at least two more drafts and more pre-production rehearsal time needed for the director to establish a rhythm.

Star Trek V. Ugh. Bad. Dreck. Didn't happen. Waste of time. The cast should donate their salaries to charity. Barf. Eek. Shatner, get your big ass out of the director's chair!
