I can't stand Trip

Porthos could easily have been the original Porthos! This is Star Trek! He could have gotten shot out of an airlock by accident and picked up by aliens who preserved him for 40 years and then revived him and returned him!

Admiral Archer's age doesn't quite work out either, he would be very old.. but I agree with the speculation that his experience with the Augment virus prolonged his age.

Porthos is excellent. Though if I had a beagle I would name him/her "Trip" which I think is a great dog name.

I'm sure what happened is that a salvage team came across his shuttle by chance. He'd drifted right through the core systems; it was a miracle that he was alive. Imagine that deep space salvage team's disappointment when they'd crawled in there and found him in that cryo tube with the dog curled up on top of him, the readouts all still in the green.

Uh, guys, Porthos was probably RIP by the time ST XI takes place. I doubt researchers put as much time and money into extending the lives of pets as they did to extend the lives of humans. I suspect the "admiral's prize beagle" was a descendant of Porthos.

You know I am not an idiot....I do realise that, I just thought it was a fun mention. My comments about Porthos were actually intended to be humorous. :nyah:
I know you're not an idiot. People who like SciFi tend to be very intelligent.

If any of you were real fans, you'd know that in "A Night in Sickbay", Porthos was given a liver transplant from an alien lizard which gave him a 150+ year lifespan.

Obviously.

;)

I'm no expert on accents but I always found him the best actor on the series. He wasn't always well written but he occasionaly got some good stuff.
I thought his restart of the engines in Divergence to be one of the best engineering scenes in all star trek

Uh, it wasn't a liver. Phlox transplanted a chameleon's pituitary gland into Porthos' brain. That gave him a 150-year lifespan.

I got to your third sentence before I realized that we weren't talking about Porthos anymore. (Porthos has an accent?! He restarted the . . . oh.)

:guffaw: Yeah, sometimes you gotta pay more attention...

Nobody in Florida has a southern-style accent? Everyone sounds the same in Texas? The "you should sound like the state you're from" argument doesn't fly, now that people move about the country and the world at will. A hundred years from now? It will matter even less.

Maybe Trip's mom was from Alabama. Maybe he went to school in Houston. Maybe he's just comfortable with the drawl and spread of that particular way of speaking. It's just not that perplexing to me, and certainly isn't a dealbreaker.

FWIW, most of the Florida panhandle is considered south Alabama. The accents and culture there are very "deep south", as opposed to the palm tree, white sand beach Florida that everybody always talks about.

I can certainly understand why some people might not like Trip, as he was written rather poorly for most of at least the first half of the series. The writers apparently decided it would be funny to write him to be the kind of southern stereotype they found to be humorous. Personally I found it rather insulting, not to mention it doesn't make sense if he was supposed to be the genius engineer he would have to be in order to be the chief engineer of such an advanced prototype starship. Of course, none of the characters really fared all that well, including the one they were apparently supposed to like, Captain Archer.
