I can't stand Trip

"Trip" is the worst character on enterprise, maybe in the entire Star trek universe.

You mean to say that Trip is worse than Wesley Crusher? I think not.

Nobody is worse than Crusher. OMG I hated Crusher (Not Wil Wheaton, I think he's an OK actor.....but this could be largely to do with Stand By Me being one of my favourite films. lol)

I don't like Trip, but I can't even agree that he's the worst on ENT, so long as Travis still counts as a character.
Hell, Porthos was a better character than Mayweather.

I love Porthos!! I was gutted when I went to see star Trek XI and Scotty said he'd lost 'Admidral Archer's prize beagle'..I actually said 'Poor Porthos' out loud and got told to shush! lol

I guess i was a little quick to judge Trip.

Perhaps you were but you are allowed to dislike a charator, don't let this lot change your mind all because we like Trip and you don't. I don't like Dr McCoy very much but a lot of other people do. I'll never change my mind about that.

Personally I love Trip, I think he is pretty sexy. I like the crew of the NX-01....but Mayweather is probably the weakest charator.

For Trip, the term "hick" simply does not apply. Check a dictionary for a definition of the term and you will find "unsophisticated." That's just plain ridiculous. Trip has a good head on his shoulders and I'm sure that he has the education necessary to serve him in good stead aboard the Enterprise.

Yeah, a stellar education where he can't do basic algebra. Came up in Shuttlepod One, IIRC.

Yes, it did.
And that was the problem with the early writing for Trip.

Connor told a story that illustrates his issues with the whole "Trip is a hick" problem.

He got a script (IIRC it was Future Tense), where Trip and members of his team were predicting how far Enterprise would travel each day. Trip tells Archer about it and that he had been wrong for like 29 days straight.

Connor went to the writers and asked them if they wanted Trip to be a leader. They said of course. He asked if they wanted Trip to be respected. They said yes. He asked how Trip can be a respected leader if he can't even calculate the distance the NX-01 would travel in a day.

The script was changed.

I don't think Connor minded being funny. But he clearly got fed up with having Trip characterized as some kind of dolt. And starting with that episode, I don't recall him being portrayed as the comic relief again throughout the remainder of the series.

Read the "Star Trek" novelization. Turns out Scotty wasn't the screwup people thought he was regarding that transporter experiment. :)

If the movie failed to establish something on its own, then it failed. One should not have to read something in addition to the movie in order to get a better appreciation for the movie or even something in the movie.

I like Trip. He's one of my favourite characters on ENT. He's likable, and has some personality. But as with most characters on ENT, I could understand why people wouldn't like him too.

I like both Connor Trinneer as an actor and Trip as a character.

That said, there is one thing that always bothered me. It's the way you could tell from that first decon chamber scene that - by God - TPTB would shoehorn some kind of romance between Trip and T'Pol into the series, no matter what.

I know, it is a silly grudge to hold ("I don't like this aspect of the character because I called it!"), but there you go.

No offense, but that thing was way too idiotic, even by "JJ verse" standards.

Uh, guys, Porthos was probably RIP by the time ST XI takes place. I doubt researchers put as much time and money into extending the lives of pets as they did to extend the lives of humans. I suspect the "admiral's prize beagle" was a descendant of Porthos.

It didn't even have to have been related to Porthos. We don't even know if Porthos was Archer's first beagle, do we? Maybe he just likes the breed.

*shrug* Just trying to give Porthos lovers a smile. I like it when novelizations are more than just reformatted scripts, and provide extra backstory or scenes that may have had to be cut from the film or the shooting schedule. For instance, there's a different beginning (which was filmed -- it's one of the deleted scenes on the DVD) that is really nice.

As I recall, the movie established that Admiral Archer's prized beagle was missing, not dead.

Sorry, I'm not clear on this. Does "that thing" refer to the novelization? Scotty? The fate of the dog in the book?

I assume researchers would develop life extension by perfecting the process on animals first. And I think if pet life-extension were possible, countless pet owners would take advantage of it. Me included. If it makes money, it will be invented.

BTW, I read comments by the writers (at trekmovie, I think -- can't find the file at the moment) in which they confirmed that Admiral Archer was our Archer, and the beagle was Porthos. Since it's a sci-fi movie, I assume that the marvels of futuristic technology make it all possible. :)

You know I am not an idiot....I do realise that, I just thought it was a fun mention. My comments about Porthos were actually intended to be humorous. :nyah:

Sorry for being vague. I was indeed referring to the novel. The "prized beagle" reference in the movie was awesome!

Remember my old avatar with Porthos growling at Simon Pegg's Scotty? There's no sign of it on my hard drive anymore... :(

Great point! I personally thought that the "JJ movie" butchered the TOS characters.

I know you're not an idiot. People who like SciFi tend to be very intelligent.

I don't think it did. It certainly changed Kirk, but I was more than okay with Zachary Quinto's Spock, and Karl Urban pretty much nailed Bones. With Sulu and Chekov there was nothing to butcher in the first place, Uhura was OK and Scotty was, well, great.

I can't wait to see what JJ and his guys will do with these characters in the sequel, and I do have pretty big expectations, like seeing Chris Pine completely rise up to the challenge of being a convincing CAPTAIN Kirk.

You get my vote.

I really hated the way they played up the hick factor early on, especially since this apparently equated with being somewhat stupid. I'm glad that this was lost as the series progressed, though from what I read it apparently took input from the actor to make that happen. It's unfortunate that the hick factor was brought back for the finale with the rather absurd notion that the chief engineer had no formal university level education.

I chalked that up to an inaccurate holodeck program. There is NO way Trip could have run the Enterprise from working on boat engines or whatever it was....
Hmm... I chalk it up to hack writing.
