I can't stand Trip

I think as Trip developed we had shades of this creeping in. I think his relationship with T'Pol was one of the best written in Trek, with just the right level of detail and the tragedy of unrequieted love.

I couldn't disagree more. And Trek already did unrequited love in DS9: Odo and Kira. Although, I didn't care for that much either, but found it more interesting than T'Pol and Trip's.

Odo and Kira never worked for me either. Odo and Lwaxana had a better vibe for my money. However, I rather like Trip's slightly angry sexual frustration and T'Pol's lip-quivering sideways glances... :p

I only remember Trip being deliberately "rude" to one alien, and that was Degra. The man who killed Trip's sister and 7 million other people. And even Degra knew he deserved it.

It was one of Trip's best episodes, and Degra's, too. That scene where they have their confrontation and, just as Degra's walking out the door, he pauses is great. Earlier in Trek, we would have had a long speech about how we need to put aside our hatred and work together for the betterment of everyone. The way Degra paused, almost started saying something like that, then dropped his head and walked out the door was unexpected, and I thought brilliant. It said much more than a speech could have.

However, I rather like T'Pol's lip-quivering sideways glances... :p

One would have to be made of stone to not be smitten by the lovely Vulcaness.
I - Surak - envy Trip. And I am not ashamed of this emotion.

I'm not a big fan of Trip. I don't hate him, but I don't see why fans love him so much. I think he's one of the most overrated characters in Star Trek.

I'm curious, who are the other most overrated characters in Trek?

inb4 "John Luke Pickerd becuz he's bald and fugly"

I really hated the way they played up the hick factor early on, especially since this apparently equated with being somewhat stupid. I'm glad that this was lost as the series progressed, though from what I read it apparently took input from the actor to make that happen. It's unfortunate that the hick factor was brought back for the finale with the rather absurd notion that the chief engineer had no formal university level education.

I chalked that up to an inaccurate holodeck program. There is NO way Trip could have run the Enterprise from working on boat engines or whatever it was....

Yeah, that bit was beyond pathetic. Not to mention offensive to everyone busting their asses to earn an engineering degree...

Hey, why waste your time at MIT and stuff, when you can easily learn all about warp field theory by working on your old man's fishing boat...

I wonder what drugs was Braga on when he wrote that shit... At least I hope he was on drugs, because no one could be THAT ignorant... RIGHT?

I think a lot of the Trip love has to do with the rest of the cast either having their potential wasted, or in the case of Archer being outright hated by many in the fandom (or at least on this board--I've not been to a convention, and most people I talk to about Trek barely recall Enterprise, if they even watched it at all, so I don't know what the offline consensus of his character is). That isn't to say he didn't develop and grow or that he was horribly written, but like some people have already mentioned, he didn't grown and develop as much as, for example, Spock or Data or hell even a few of the characters in Voyager.

That said, I couldn't put any character in this show in the same category as Lwaxanna Troi. This show didn't have any breakout star characters either by design or by being pushed into the background by UPN (O hi thar, Phlox), but they weren't irritatingly idiotic either.

Well, I've been to conventions and the audience literally screams when Connor is called on stage.

That said, I couldn't put any character in this show in the same category as Lwaxanna Troi.

Neither can I, THANK GOD!!

I agree, that was pretty idiotic. I just pretend that what T'Pol actually said was that young Trip's interest in engineering was sparked by working on busted boat engines while growing up on the Gulf Coast. :techman:

Um, T'Pol didn't anything about Trip's education. That was Hoshi, who, after serving 10 years with her superior officer knew absolutely nothing about him.

Just like Bermaga.

Gah! Sorry. I haven't seen You Know What since the day it aired (for obvious reasons), so I guess my memory's a bit fuzzy.

Hmmm...Guess I don't have to tell you who my favorite character is.

I am not the type of person that slams other people's opinions. I respect opinions even when they disagree with my own. I've been reading this thread and I must say there are many things I disagree with regarding Trip's character.

First off, his accent. My brother was from Sarasota, FL and my family would go down there to spend time with him. Not only were there many folks down there that sounded like Trip, when I was around them for a certain amount of time I came back here to OH sounding like that also. An accent doesn't make someone a hick.

Secondly, what I've read about him abusing his friendship with Captain Archer I don't get. If I was close friends with someone and I was in a higher-ranking position than they were in, it wouldn't negate my relationship with them. I would still ask their advice about certain things. I don't feel that makes Captain Archer weak...I think it makes him a better person. As for him sharing a meal with Trip or watching a water polo match, I don't see an issue with that.

Not only do I see him as a competent engineer, I don't feel that he has been abusive of any alien race. His character seems like a real person to me, and that is one of the reasons that I enjoy Enterprise so much. They don't act like these unreachable, untouchable people who don't care about each other and are only concerned about moving up in rank or, if they are already of a higher rank, acquiring even more power at someone's expense. I get very tired of people like that, not only in TV shows but in real life as well. You can be the poorest person on the face of the earth financially but the richest in family and friends. I'll take that any day of the week.:bolian:

Have a good one!

For Trip, the term "hick" simply does not apply. Check a dictionary for a definition of the term and you will find "unsophisticated." That's just plain ridiculous. Trip has a good head on his shoulders and I'm sure that he has the education necessary to serve him in good stead aboard the Enterprise.

Let's face it: a lot of institutions of higher learning lean toward turning out graduates who are conformists. They encourage individualism in theory but not in practice.

Trip doesn't follow the herd.

I think that Trip is very sophisticated. I think that he is such a master at what he does that he has succeeded in buffaloing a lot of people.

I think that behind all of that charm is a very sharp mind and a devious grin. :p

I guess I like him over all. But I am biased towards engineers :)

I think the nearest I came to not liking him at all was in the episode: Cogenitor. Great writing and all that but....

That one really had me shaking my head. I couldn't believe there were no consequences for Trip in his relationship with Archer etc. How that huge incident just seemed to evaporate without any pick up was beyond me.

It took me a while to "forget" that incident. I cant imagine how he could of screwed everyone more...I guess he could of also blown up the ship. He didn't. So there's something :D

I absolutely could not stand Trip the first time I started watching ENT. But then, I was also quite meh about ENT.. I blame it all on the circumstances of viewing. Late night airing, times changed frequently, canceled for sports for weeks at a time, endless phone sex ads airing every 5 minutes, falling asleep trying to watch it because of the lateness..

When I started watching it on my own time with no commercials Trip's little vulnerabilities made the Pecan Pie hokeyness forgivable. Then we got eps like Cogenitor and the whole T'Pol arc and by the time ENT was finished and I was rewatching it I was all fond of that pie and that accent. This is what always happens to me with Trek, there are very few characters or arcs I don't end up liking quite a bit even if it didn't start out that way.

Trip could have stayed in the stereotyped sidekick role but the character ended up one of the most developed on ENT, I would suggest more so than Archer.
