I keep stumbling across Avatar DVDs in shops and so forth and keep thinking "I can't believe we don't have a copy of this". But then I don't buy it. I guess deep down, I didn't think it was so fantastic after all.

Are there any sci fi/fantasy must-haves that you find yourself strangely resistant to acquiring?

Remembering that the version out now is just a vanilla version, with a special edition coming out later this year, you probably made a good call holding off. (And odds are if you want a 3-D version you'll have to wait even longer.)

For me there's been a couple of films I've been meaning to get but just haven't gotten around to. Percy Jackson is one, and the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland is another. They interest me, but not enough to buy them right now. And although I have been very critical of Avatar, I am interested in picking it up on Blu-Ray but I'll wait till the special edition comes out.

Don't worry. I've had no desire to buy it either. Saw the film once. Thought it was visually stunning. But IMO, its story really does not stand out as special.

I was completely blown away by the movie, but after seeing it twice in the theaters I haven't had much desire to revisit it. Partly because, yes, once you get past the incredible spectacle of the thing there's not a whole lot underneath.

But unlike others I don't really hold that against the movie. It did it's job really well the FIRST time, and that's good enough for me. Not every scifi movie I see needs to be some deep and profound thing that I have to watch again and again.

I didn't even see it in the theater, and I still resist buying the DVD. And I usually buy every decent scifi flick that comes out.

I'm not too sure why, but I think I'll wait for the instant stream from Netflix.

I picked up Percy Jackson and it was pretty good, but I have no interest in Alice.

I saw it twice in the theatre. And as much as I enjoyed it I don't yet feel inclined to buy the DVD either - maybe when they release that special edition, as said. It is a film I'll want to watch again, just maybe not all at once.

I saw it twice at the movies and once in 2D, there is no point to buy the 2D version, while it looks nice and is a fun movie, it's nothing special at all in 2D.

The way the 3D was done on a huge screen is what makes it so amazing.

I've been trying to train myself to wait for a good sale for the movies that fall into my "pretty good I'd like to own it" category. So recent films I enjoyed and want like Percy Jackson and Hot Tub Time Machine are still sitting on the shelves waiting for a price drop/sale.

I still but the must haves on release day and the occasional wanted-to-see-but-never-got-around-to-it.

Then there are the movies like SWORD AND THE SORCERER and THE CAT FROM OUTER SPACE, which are childhood favorites that I am afraid to buy because I don't want to ruin my memories since they're probably actually not very good.

I haven't picked it up yet either, and it's not because I give a toss about the Special/3D editions. I just have more important films to buy on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Yeah, it was hearing about the phenomenal quality of the Blu-Ray that pushed it into the 'to buy' camp for me. But only just.

I don't have nearly a good enough home entertainment setup to make Avatar worth buying on DVD and I'm not buying some expensive setup just to watch a movie that was worth watching only once. When you get past the visual spectacle, you're left with a dopey and derivative story.

I just can't get myself interested in watching it. I don't usually pay attention to hype, but this movie was so ridiculously over-hyped, and everyone and his grandmother was banging on about it so much, that I just got sick to death of hearing about it. That alone put me off the movie. Plus, reading comments like the one Temis made above doesn't exactly inspire me to sit through it.

I might rent it someday if I get interested, but it's not really something I care about. My girlfriend had 2 free passes to it when it came out last Christmas, but she ended up having to work the night they were good for, and I didn't want to go without her, so we never bothered.
