I, Borg is really bad

"I, Borg" ruined a great science fiction enemy. The equivalent would have been if in some incarnation of Alien, they had the epiphany to rationalize with the xenomorph (and it worked). The point of the Borg was that they were so foreign, so distant from anything remotely known to us, that they would be relentless in destroying us. There's no window to talk, because they have no interest -- no concept -- of talking to others. Their mission is one thing and one thing only: to assimilate, destroy. "Protect yourself, Captain, or they'll destroy you." Chilling.

Some hack writer decided that it would be cool if they weren't like that, and thus we got what we got. Thus endeth the Borg.

I don't agree with that at all. I don't think "I, Borg" changed anything at all about the Borg really. To me the Borg were a race of humans (humanoid aliens very close genetically to regular humans) who had augmented their bodies with technology and then interconnected their minds. Thus creating a new collective consciousness and erasing all the individuals. Under those parameters "I, Borg" offered a logical and consistant view of what would happen to a drone who would be disconnected from that consciousness.

The ruining came later with the Queen and turning up the gore-factor and adding icky green lighting to everything.

Which could mean the Roman numeral for "one". After all, the story is about one Borg. And the story isn't shown from Hugh's perspective, so "I" isn't really appropriate. ;) (I'm aware of the Issac Asimov story, BTW.)

First Contact and Voyager did more to 'ruin' them, IMO.

First Contact turned them into a zombie horde led by a mustache-twirling (figuratively of course) main heavy. In Q Who, they remark on how the Borg benefit from not having a single leader who can be fallible. And what happens in First Contact? Queenie lost because she wanted that android D.
