I am starting to really warm up to TOS

Obviously TOS is experiencing a renaissance.. There was recently a blockbuster movie remake featuring a young Kirk and Spock. Just sayin.

I'm 31 and TOS is by far my favorite. I grew up with TNG and it took me a few tries before I could make it through an entire TOS ep without laughing at the cheesy styrofoam rocks. Once I was able to look past that though I found the characters and plots to be so much more interesting.

Cheesy Styrofoam rocks? Come one NOTHING is better that the custuming done for Friday's Child - with the rug and drapery scraps sewen on from the local Carpeteria store. ;)

What is really cheesy are the plastic place mats used as armor in the episode Elaan of Troyius.

Actually it may be cheese but very creative for the limited budget they had to work with.

Trek was never more popular than it was in the 90s with TNG, DS9 and VOY.. FC was one of the biggest money making films of the franchise, alongside TWOK and TrekXI.

The downside is that while TOS had dated production values, the characters and most of the stories were effectively timeless, portraying human truths. TNG-ENT were very much products of the "Boomer Culture" and already look dated and "very 1990s" in all respects. That's really the difference between the two generations and their product...

TNG looks dated, especially the early seasons, as it is very 1980's, but I cant agree that DS9 onwards is dated.

It really amazes me how the first couple of seasons of TNG do look dated but the further you go into the series the less dated it looks. I just watched some season 7 episodes last week and they look very good.

Never thought of TNG ever looking dated myself or the other show after it. TOS looks dated because of the fake looking aliens and cheap computers. Enterprise is meant to be the prequel to all of these and because of updated filming techniques it makes TOS ever more ancient. But who cares, it's still a great show and I love watchng it whenever I get the chance.

It's not just that TNG looks dated, but that the entire series puts forward a 'baby Boomer Generation hits their 30's' mindset on many occasions - disturbingly so in some cases, such as the more than questionable moral 'it's better to let genocides happen than risk getting our hands dirty'... it's extremely 1990s in its mindset and becomes glaringly less relevant as time goes on.

^ And from my point of view, JJ's movie felt NOTHING like TOS, if anything it felt like a hamfisted parody of TOS, and makes me question the perceptive ability of anyone who can seriously make the claim that "it's just like TOS".

Nothing is or will ever be just like original 79. Everyone knows and accepts that.

JJTrek did bring back the fun and adventure side of TOS that has been sorely lacking. Everyone I know who is as much a fan as I seems to think so, most moderate Trek fans do, and anyone who keeps the show in perspective as the thing it was for its time seems to think so.

The people who are most vocal about their hatred of the latest Trek thing, by no coincidence, fought tooth and nail against any concept since that could possibly violate the pure vision of the first half of the first season. Not just this new film, but every film and series that came along after TMP have been treated to this kind of behaviour, without fail.
Sometimes, it's better to ignore that view and keep it in perspective as the thing it is for its time.

I saw a few reruns of the classic series when I was a child. But Space 1999 was the one showng every Saturday evening in Canada in those days, so that was my paragon of science fiction.

I saw a few more in university, but by then "The Next Generation" had taken over, and it was no match for the reruns of Tom Baker as Doctor Who which PBS was showing in those days. Good humour always beats out soap opera for me.

Now I have finally starting watching the entire run of classic Star Trek: and I must say I am delighted and entranced. The bevy of babes on every episode is very nice too. I certainly prefer classic Star Trek over the angst, torture, dark shadowy rooms and hopelessness of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Universe.

I enjoy TNG and saw most of it when I was younger but in my opinion, it's got nothing on the original series. I find the original crew much more likeable and relatable, and the stories are so creative (often very powerful) and very entertaining.

I am watching the show on Blu-ray and am really enjoying the rewatch, particularly the Kirk/Spock/McCoy dynamic.

Despite much protesting and anguish in the 80s, fans of TOS warmed up to TNG and accepted it into the lexicon. They had no choice. The show was popular with non TOS fans who embraced that as "their" show.

Or, you know, TNG started off with an extremely wobbly first season which (rightfully) drew criticism, and then the show itself got better and started winning over the old fans.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. I do enjoy the later series, but when rewatching today, TNG especially feels more dated - especially with some of the more heavyhanded 'morality' episodes. I cringe when Riker and Pulaski vaporize their clones in 'Up the Long Ladder', for instance. After a few more decades of debate on issues like abortion and stem cell research, their 'enlightened' view of life seems rather... archaic.

I think DS9 managed to avoid being dated fairly well.

With the current problems with terrorists, and the obvious parallels that can be drawn with the Dominion War, DS9 is actually the most timely.

TOS, of course, is timeless. :D

That one really stuck out with me. Those clones weren't embryonic or anything, they were fully adult twin brothers and sisters. Riker and Pulaski committed mass murder there, against people who were helpless to do anything about it. Makes you wonder why Tom Riker survived...

But it's not the only episode with such boomer-esque morality. I keep thinking of the episode where Picard endorses allowing a planet to be obliterated (and the guy trying to save the people he was observing was wrongbad) even though it was shown in the episode that the Enterprise could have saved the planet without the population even being made aware.

Then, of course, the hostile stances on religion, the Riker-gay-sex issue, the 'You can't be a lesbian even though you love me' Trill nonsense, etc. It's just everywhere...

And what makes it more telling is just how much captain Jerico, who was sent as a 'send-up' against type and meant to be the heavy of an episode - became a fan favorite.

I think DS9 managed to avoid being dated fairly well.

DS9's major issue is that it's decidedly schizophrenic at times. It may age less harshly than TNG or VOY has, but I don't think it stands up too well overall, personally. It's less of the 'boomer' issue and more of the 'keep escalating the kewl' issue. It actually starts failing to live up to itself.

I was just the opposite. TOS was always my favorite and didn't even watch TNG when it came out. It took me a long time to warm up to it. Now I prefer it over TOS, although, TOS is somewhat more sentimental to me.
