I am going to re-read the Ender books

"Ender's Game" is my all-time favorite book, but I've only read it once, and that was about 10 years ago. Since then, I have made it a point to read every sequel or spin-off that has ever come out. I'm in the middle of "Ender in Exile" right now. Today at Borders, I also saw two hardcover comics, one for "Ender's Game" and the other for "Ender's Shadow." Once I finish "Ender in Exile" and read these comics, I am going to attempt to re-read the Ender series (at least the first four books...I'm not as big a fan of the Bean books and probably won't re-read them).

This will also be the first time in my life that I have ever read a book twice.

Good luck. I read most of the Ender books, and frankly I found them more hype than substance. I picked up Ender's Game last year to reread it and put it down about 3/4 of the way through, asking myself "WTH did I ever see in this".

It may just be me, but I think there's a "right time" for reading Ender's Game or that book does not show up well on a subsequent re-reading.

I remember being quite taken by the book when I first read it. Also about 10 years ago, I think. I then went on to read Speakers of the Dead and (I think) Xenocide (whatever was the third book). I especially liked Speakers of the Dead too. If you had asked me, I would unhesitatingly recommend both books - preferring Speaker just a bit more than Game.

And then about 2-3 years back, I went back and re-read Ender's Game. And for some reason, I was hyper-critical of almost every thing in the book. There's a lot of talking up of Ender that Orson Scott Card does - and I was going "More show, less tell..." and some of the lionization seemed beyond childish. I could no longer suspend disbelief, could no longer be fully immersed in the story. Instead I was totally focused on Orson Scott Card's writing flaws - the framing was showing thru in almost all scenes. Could not believe all the stupidity the sister and brother get into.

I still don't know what it was - but since then I have stayed away from Ender. I am hoping that several years down the road, I might want to pick it up again (and hopefully like it all over again). This kinda thing doesn't often happen with me. If I like a book, generally I am able to enjoy subsequent re-reads (I must have read R. L. Stevenson's Treasure Island several several times over a period of 3 consecutive summers).

I'll be very interested in seeing if you like the re-read. And I hope reading my experience doesn't make you see the "framing" while reading.

Well, having never re-read a book before in my life, I have no idea how I normally would respond. Hopefully re-reading it doesn't end up ruining it for me. I've loved every sequel to varying degrees (Speaker for the Dead is right up there with Ender's Game), so hopefully that means I'm not quite dead to the Ender universe.

I liked Ender's Game an awful lot the first time I read it--in middle school, or late elementary school, I believe. Although I did my best to slog through the sequels, I never finished any of them. I wonder how good they would be upon re-reading now, too. Maybe I'll give it a go one of these days...

I liked "Ender's Game" ok... I also liked "Speaker for the Dead". But a certain twist in "Xenocide" made me wow to never again read a book by Orson Scott Card. I and I never have since. I have found better authors to read.

good stuff. I particularly enjoyed Ender in Exile when it came out. Seemed the most true to the Ender we saw in the first book, which is seperate from the older Ender from the rest of the series...

In my experience, Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead both hold up very well in multiple readings.

This is my feeling too. I have found that I can't stomach OSC beyond those two books, to boot. His characters are far too crafty for the reader to relate to. Way too much "I know what to do! But the bad guy will know that I know, and I should do the opposite! But the bad guy will know that I know he knows, and blah blah blah" ad infinitum. Eventually I just found it exhausting.

Ender's Game was my favorite book when I was in Jr. High School. I've read it a handful of times--the last about a year ago. It does, however, have the knack of being "just not as good" upon later readings.

I think the problem is, most people first read it when they're young and it's a really fun story and quick read. However, once they become more educated and experienced its flaws really start to show. It is very poorly written and suffers from a lot of the same problems as much of the Star Wars EU.

Speaker is definitely better written. It takes the more classical science-fiction approach and succeeds on most accounts. Ender is grown up and so is the story. I also think it stands up better upon subsequent readings and does hold up well on its own. Maybe you just try that first?

The rest of the series is just awful. As Hyperspace pointed out, the big twist at the end of Xenocide is just completely out of left field. But its real problem is Ender gets demoted to the B-plot and the main plot is just friggen boring and utterly uninteresting.

Children is just a good old fashioned wast of time. I think both stories would have been better served if Card had omitted a lot of stuff and merged and truncated them into one book, wich, as I understand, was what he was originally going to do. I guess he was just after the extra paycheck.

Another lingering problem they each have (And it's one that gets much worse in the Bean series.), is Card's overbearing heavy-handed theme: "Be a good Mormon; make lots of babies."

The nice thing about Ender & Speaker is he keeps the politics out--well, for the most part.
