I almost died

Mrs. Silvercrest

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I have not been on here for several months. I have had an awful time of it. Back in March I was sick but really couldn't figure out what was wrong. Strange symptoms like throwing up and back pain. Never had that before. I had in the past had ulcers that seemed to keep coming back 3 times in 3 years, same time of year.

But this time no symptoms of one. So I didn't know what was wrong. The doctors were unsure as well; throwing up and back pain?? One night at dinner on March 7th I felt something odd inside of me but didn't know what was wrong. I had a doctor's appointment on March 9th, thought I would be okay until then.

But by March 8th I couldn't walk without help and the pain was something else, again it was all so strange. We went to the emergency room. They didn't know what was wrong with me either. It was not my appendix, I still have it, not the right area or symptoms..

The emergency room had me do a CT Scan. The tech that did the scan saw what was wrong and she said that was the first time she ever ran from the room to tell the emergency doctors what was wrong. The next thing I know the nurse in the emergency room looked me right in the eye and told me I had an ulcer that leaked and ate a hole in my stomach and got acid all over my abdomen area. And if I didn't have surgery right away they couldn't be sure of saving my life!

That was so scary and crazy, I never felt the ulcer and after 3 of them I knew when I got one and took the medicine for it. But this time it gave no warning. Number 4 ulcer meant business. I nearly died! Two hours after going to the emergency room I was on the operating table! If I had waited to go to the doctor the next day, maybe I would not be here now?

I ended up in the hospital 10 awful days some of which was in ICU. Then I had to go back a 2nd time for 3 days, so 13 days in all in hospital!! I am still recovering. And may or may not need more surgery! I still can not believe it all happened!

I could have died just 10 days before my birthday! I can still recall calling my mom from the emergency room, just in case I didn't make it to say good bye! My husband was there with me, but couldn't stay in the hospital because of Covid restrictions. So he went home to wait, some friends waited with him. Everyone was shocked this was happening to me! Just like that. One day just thinking I was sick with flu or cold or just my back acting up, to being in the hospital near death!

What is still scary is that I thought I was getting better and then everything went wrong. A person just never knows. Anyone else have something crazy like this happen to them?

Wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you lived to tell the tale.

OMG! Glad that you decided to go see someone about it, and that they were able to catch it in time. Best wishes for a quick recovery, hopefully things go really well, and you don't need to go back for further surgery.

Very happy you're still with us.

Holy CRAP!!! I'm so glad you're OK. Thank God you went to the ER. Too many people wait and say, "I'll just call the doctor on Monday," or some such. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

That's quite the roller coaster of events. So sorry you had to go through all of that, but happy to hear they caught it in time and that you did the smart thing and got it checked out quickly instead of waiting it out. I wish you the best on a full and speedy recovery.:techman::)

I am so sorry.

My Dad complained of back pain long before he died. We got the MRI results the day he was buried. He had a tumor on his spine. Arthritis was what they called it at first. My Mom didn’t outlive him four months.

Failure to thrive with a feeding tube no less. She willed herself to die.

Today, it was nearly heat stroke for me.

Hope you're on the mend and feeling better. Definitely take care of yourself.

Many years ago my increasing pain in the back (more or less) turned out to be a kidney stone. Damn painful things those, but nowhere near as bad as what you had going on.

pheeew, that was a narrow, thing, Mrs Silvercrest. I'm so glad the staff at the ER were so thorough and found the cause of the problem in time! Please keep us updated on your recovery!

publiusr, glad to see the sunstroke had no lingering effect. And I'm sorry for your double loss. Something similar happened to my grandparents. They had married with a special license in their late teens (back then you came of age at 21) and were happily married for more than half a century when grandma suddenly collapsed and died in hospital a few hours later. The post mortem revealed that she had a huge brain tumor. My grandfather who had always ben a very jolly and lively man spent the next weeks as if he had had a stroke, just sitting there, motionless, staring to the ground. He wilted like a flower and died some 8 weeks after grandma.
Sometimes you can't get at people in such an emotional paralysis. They don't want to stay in this world and so they leave. It is so frustrating to be able to help but be denied the attempt.
