Hypothetically Speaking, What if this movie really takes off?

Nope.
It looks like a crappy Star Wars movie and it smells like a crappy Star Wars movie.
The only difference is Abrams is slapping the Trek label on it.

Then don't see it. Why bother coming here when you say the same thing over and over? You sound like a broken record and you only serve to annoy the rest of us.

He's not turning it into Star Wars and we have 5 months to find out if it will suck or not.

Matt, stop it. You're not saying anything you haven't already beat into the ground long ago, and you're not addressing the topic.

Everyone else, stop egging him on.

Yes, I did. The first post I made in this thread addressed it.
And then you made another post, and there was an admonishment to you and others by a forum moderator to knock off the off-topic stuff. And then there was this post and this post and this post and this post and this post and this post and this post and this post and this post. None of them were particularly on topic and all of them were the same old thread-derailment which has gotten you warnings before. And why am I pretending that you intend to do anything different in the future? You just came back from a month off and you've got one warning so far today. Now you've got two, this one for repeated disruption of a thread after being cautioned way back near the beginning to stop.

You'll have company, though.

Tell that to Aragorn for provoking me.
Aragorn had the smarts to shut up after PKTrekGirl told him to stop.

Herkimer Jitty -- also one of those instructed to stop -- had to come back for more, including this treat:

Nope.
It looks like a crappy Star Wars movie and it smells like a crappy Star Wars movie.

You own a Smell-O-Vision?

...what does Worf smell like?
He'll also get one for thread disruption. Not happy about that.

number6 also knew better and jumped in anyway:

He'll get one for thread disruption, as well, for the above post and others.

I can see ST:12 taking place during the TOS era. Perhaps even take a classic TOS episode and put a new spin on it for the big screen -- such as The Doomsday Machine.

I think they'd go for an unseen early 5YM adventure that slots between known episodes of TOS, and I can also see them taking the opportunity to "introduce" a few new characters to the mix: particularly the arrivals of Janice Rand, Christine Chapel and maybe Mr Kyle? And perhaps a reference to Joanna McCoy?

I like the idea of including new casting for existing characters. But I don't think they'll place the story within the existing 5YM since this is a retelling of the Kirk story.

I think a good sequel (and we'll get one if this movie's a success) would be a stand-alone, completely new adventure which would continue to reach out to new fans, but also have a few nods to die-hard Trek fans - which including Chapel and Rand and Co would do.

And that would also continue the process of building the new cast 'family' for more movies down the line.

Looking forward to it already :)

I imagine that if this movie successfully gets the audience involved with the new versions of Kirk, Spock and so forth then nods to old continuity will actually become less important to the success of future movies.

That will definitely become true further down the line, but I think with the next one they'll keep the connections quite tight.

The "aging effect" will come about...those of us (and future Trek creators) who remember TOS as fondly as we do will continue to either suggest or "sneak in" (if you're in a position to do so) as many references, characters, and concepts from the show as possible.

And then the NEW version will engender its own connections, differences, life forces, troubles, tribbles, and what have you. But it does seem more likely to come about early in the relaunch more so than later (until the box office results for Star Trek XVI: Brain and Brain...What Is Brain? are released, anyway).

Then we will have more Abram Trek. I'm very hopeful for this film. I want new trek, and i admit it, i want it with the original crew for another couple of films.

Actually I would be more parcial toward Star Trek XVI: The Search For Spock's Brain.

[insert Hero's Sylar jokes/Spock's Brain jokes here.]

It looks pretty mindless to me.

I agree. I mean take another look at the trailer and you'll all see how right Matt is!

I mean that's completely mindless! People acting out of character, nothing but shhoting and explosions. Watching that trailer gives you all the information that you need to realize how that movie is going to definitely be the worse Trek ever!

And don't forget the "odd-numbered-so-it-will-suck" ST XVII: And The Children Shall Lead the Way To Eden...

...Or as trek fans will call it "AtCSLtWtE".
