Hypothetically, say DS9 premeried tonight

Would the TV/Movie reviewers view Trek today less/more favorably then they did back in the 80's and 90's?

It seems like what gets favorable reviews these days (except for Dark Knight) has to be edgy, avant garde, and cynically humorous.

DS9 premiered in 1993 so there wouldn't have been that many 80s reviews, I suspect.

It would probably confuse people given the upcoming movie.

They would need to improve the special effects in the pilot, and use more makeup to make the actors look younger. Jake would probably have to have his legs chopped off.

^If we're going for relevancy, I'd ask why is DS9 set after TNG, a show that ended 15 years ago.

And frankly, why does the obscure bartender from Voyager's pilot get his own TV show? It's nuts!

Last that I recall Jake is like 6'4" or 6'6" so he could play basketball if we want to say he is a pre-teen again

It might raise an eyebrow or two that a main hero is an unrepenting terrorist, another hangs around religious fanatics just because, and the protagonist superpower seeks peaceful cooperation with brutal oppressors it could easily smash...

The future messiah for a whole world is a black man. How unoriginal!

Does the OP mean the show as it was filmed back then, or is the show being reshot? It wouldn't have the same actors then...

Given ENT's cancellation, and the worry about the new movie, I'd say DS9 would do as well or better. Esp. since it had the Dominion war...
But then I wouldn't have my books!!! :(

What show were you watching? :guffaw:

I think it would do about the same, or a little worse. Only the Star Trek franchise name would save it after a slow start. The audience has little patience for character development.

I have to say I don't recognise that description.

We could look forward to such promos that state,

"Starring Terry Farrell from TV's Becker" and "from the producer of the hit sci-fi show, Battlestar Galactica".

unrepenting terrorist = Kira
hanging around religious fanatics = Sisko (?)
protagonist superpower = the Federation
brutal oppressors = Cardassia

Really, the only things that separate a terrorist from a hero are perspective (for example, in the Revolutionary War, the colonies' forces were heroes to Americans, terrorists to the British), and Cardassia was very much weakened from years of war (one of the main motivations for joining the Dominion was so that they would have equal or greater footing than the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans).

And yet, by the end of DS9, those brutal oppressors did attain peace with the protagonist superpower, which proves a point about how labels are dependent only on meaning and are, ultimately and ironically, meaningless.

It would need to focus on the serialized elements, like 'lost' or 'battlestar'. No more filler episodes, no standalones. If it could present the story without a lot of traditional Trek structure... could work just fine.

AND all Bajoran uniforms would show exposed cleavage.

Even Odo's? I suppose he could just morph up a pair . . .

If DS9 premiered tonight then nobody would like it because we'd all be comparing it to a classic series such as Star Trek Voyager.
