Hypothetical Question-What if Russell T. Davies was involved?

If RTD helmed nuTrek,
All the Kirk/Spock slash stories would seem like Disney compared to what would have turned up on screen.
Kirk would have been the one to blow up Vulcan (so T'Pring wouldn't have interfered with Kirk/Spock)
Oh, and Spock would be black.
Pike would have turned out to be The Master
and Nero would have to answer to the Ood.

No. I thank God he didn't have anything to do with Trek. That said, I've enjoyed his Who work and some of TW. Now let's see how Moffit does.

I'm more interested that they hinted RTD was almost recruited for the Star Wars TV series, and they got a British writer instead. A few years ago they were saying they were looking for writers from all over the world for that show - I do wonder what has happened to it, and them, and the writers, and all. Not a goddamn peep, so it's either slipped into development hell, is progressing at a snail's pace, or Lucas really knows how to keep a lid on things.

The only one of those I'd inherently have a problem with is Kirk blowing up Vulcan (aside: did the Doctor ever commit genocide on RTD's watch? I don't follow the series so I wouldn't know)

Hell, we've already had a black Spock, Tim Russ's Tuvok. And he was assuredly awesome. The rest aren't entirely unreasonable things to do if you're doing a straight reboot, and my view of them would pretty much depend on whether or not I liked them.

I mean, Spock/Uhura, would I ever instinctively think that's a good idea? No, and I was of course completely wrong.

No, we had a black Vulcan, Tuvok, not a black Spock. My remark was to the fact that almost all couples in RTD shows/stories are black/white. So in the Kirk/Spock RTD slash version of ST09, Kirk would be white and Spock would be black (or vise versa).

JJ's reboot attempted to (and so far does) give us the same dynamic between all the major characters.

(And technically, RTD did keep dwelling on the Doctor killing all the Daleks AND the Time Lords in the Last Time War, even though we later find out some escaped)

Ah, but does it give us a black/white relationship?

...yes. Man and woman, naturally, but it's still interracial goodness.

Even still I can't see him making Kirk intentionally genocide anyone, much less the Vulcans. That's what the bad guys do.

As far as I knew, Boomtown originally was going to be Paul Abbott's episode, the synopsis for which was:

The revelation that the Doctor had been manipulating Rose's life in order to turn her into the ideal companion.

When that fell through I thought Boomtown was the last minute replacement.
I had never heard that. That was exactly what series 1 needed. Instead, Boomtown (from what I recall at least, I've not reached it in my reviews yet) was the worst of a very poor bunch.

It's a very hypothetical question given that RTD has on more than one occasion been somewhat scathing about Trek and all it stands for.

I've never heard RTD diss Star Trek. In fact, in an interview with Starlog a few years back, RTD praised TNG, saying the way it re-introduced Trek was an inspiration for how he wanted to re-introduce Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat on the other hand, has been somewhat critical of Star Trek.

Well, I don't necessarily agree S1 is a poor bunch - I think it veers wildly from brilliant to fairly mediocre - but I do agree with you that Boomtown is pretty bad and pure filler.

Abbott's episode was happening for "about two weeks." RTD told him when Paul gave him the synopsis "he'd ruined his companion" in a joking fashion, but said later he was quite confident Abbott would have made it work because he's a brilliant writer. When it turned out Abbott was too busy, though, Boomtown was written in a hurry, one of the reasons it's not as strong as some of the other RTD scripts of S1.

The only thing I'll say is that I'm not convinced that RTD's tendency to go for BigBigEpicOMG finales in Doctor Who is a trait of his fundamental writing style -- the impression I get, especially after watching Torchwood: Children of Earth, is that that's a stylistic choice he makes for Doctor Who, which works for some people but not for others. I'm unwilling to presume that he would make that same stylistic choice for other projects.
