Hypnotising chickens

Miss Chicken

Little three legged cat with attitude
Admiral
My sister and I were just talking about how we used to hypnotise our chcikens when We were young. Did anyone else here used to do this?

And why we are on the subject - how many of you keep chickens or have kept them in thr past?

^ You'd be surprised where some people keep their chickens.

We had 6 chickens when I was a child. Their names were Henrietta, Harriet, Uggie (short for Ugly), Fusssy, I can't remember what the other two were callled.

My eldest sister was the one who used to hypnotise them using the chalk line method. I used to try to hypnotise them myself but they wouldn't behave for me. My sister was such a bossy girl that even the chickens knew to obey her.

Of the 4 children in our family, only me and my siter showed any interest in the chickens. I loved feeding them and chasing them back into their pen when they were let out to eat the snails in the garden.

Our very fat cat, Tiddles, would freak out and run back inside when the chickens were let out.

I remember how much nicer the eggs were compared to store bought eggs.

our neighbours used to have chickens. About 30 or 40. We got adopted by the chickens, kindof. They used to fly over the fence as we apparently had the fatter worms :D (and better hiding places for the eggs).

Hypnotizing chicken is fun! Haven't done it in 40 years. Thanks for the inspiration, heehee. I think I'll give it a try on Tuesday when I'm out sampling near a few farms :D

The only chickens I have ever acquired were already fried, baked, sandwiches, eggs, or salad.

We had live geese, though, when I was still living on an acreage. My dad had a mechanics' business, and someone paid him in geese. Instead of eating them, we made pets of them: Alfie, Fadinah, Chesley, and Benny.

Unfortunately, I already used a "poultry in motion" joke in another thread. :sigh:

But I do have to ask: how can you TELL if a chicken is hypnotized? They just stand around and stare at things anyway...

Video showing a hypnotised chicken. The time they can stay hypnotised last from only a few seconds up to 30 minutes. We used to time our chickens when they were hypnotised. I can't remember our record but it was several minutes.

You tell them to "act like a human" and they stand around texting on a cell phone (as that's now a "typical" human behavior).

While chicken are very inquisitive birds and can watch things with great interest for hours, they scarcely are completely motionless (unless they are breeding or sneaking up to a particularly appetizing insect). However, they fall into a state of complete petrification when you lie them down flat on their backs. I'm not sure how it works, but it does infallibly :) Makes catching a whole flock much easier.

If a chicken is on the phone, tell them to call BOK! ;)

We chopped their heads off and had chicken wings for dinner.

With dad being a preacher, sometimes members of the church would gift us with food or live poultry. I remember him doing the hypnotized chicken trick. One time someone gave us a colorful little bantam rooster. I think he wound up as dinner or the dog killed him or something.

The most memorable time was someone else gave us a chicken when I was about 8 or 9. We didn't have a chopping block though, so dad grabbed it by the neck, spun it around a few times, and snapped the head off. The dog then chased the headless chicken for two minutes as it ran around the yard. The head was on the ground, eyes open and still trying to breathe.

I suppose if it had been able to think, it would have been something like, "WTF!"

I used to draw circles in the sand with a line going off its perimeter and the chicken would just stop and stare at the circle.

propably because it looked like the cross-section of a huge worm ;) :D

Chicken are very inquisitive birds. They'll be fascinated by anything new and unusual. Our neighbour's chicken used to sit on the fence and watch my pet rats teaching our rabbit how to dig proper holes. I was surprised the chicken didn't start digging tunnels themselves. (the rabbit took a while to get the idea but after that he dug a tunnel system that could rival most larger cities' underground railroads :D)
