All this talk of the (possible) A-Team movie has me feeling very nostalgic. Dirk Benedict was my first crush EVER. I couldn't believe, after checking the list, that he hadn't been done before, so I decided to wade through my array of photos and use him for this week's hunk.
Dirk Benedict (born Dirk Niewoehner on March 1, 1945) is an American movie, television and stage actor, perhaps best known for playing the characters Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck in "The A-Team" television series and Lieutenant Starbuck in the original "Battlestar Galactica" film and television series. He was born in Helena, Montana, and grew up in White Sulphur Springs, Montana.
One of his first big breaks as an actor came when he landed a role with the Broadway production of Butterflies are Free. When the New York run ended, he joined the touring production, which did a few performances in Hawaii. While there, he was cast as a guest actor on "Hawaii Five-O." That role led to him being cast in the low-budget horror film, Sssss!. He then was cast as the psychotic husband of Twiggy in W, and the next year, landed a lead role in the police series, "Chopper One." Less than four years later, in 1978, he landed the role of Starbuck on the original "Battlestar Galactica." The show went off the air a year later and Dirk went on to do numerous low-budget films as well as numerous guest appearances on various TV shows. In 1983, he was cast as Templeton "Faceman" Peck on "The A-Team."
After The A-Team, Dirk wrote two auto-biographical novels, Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy, and And Then We Went Fishing. In the first book, he detailed how his strict following of the Macrobiotic lifestyle cured him of cancer. It was in this second book that he described his own dedication to fatherhood (he was awarded sole custody of his two young sons), and contrasted it with his own father, who died when Dirk was 18. His parents had divorced when he was a teenager, due to the extreme domestic violence that occured in the household. One night, his father returned and nearly beat Dirk's mother to death. Dirk's older brother saved their mother's life by fatally shooting the man inside their Montana home. Ironically, Dirk's summer job that year was working in the small town's cemetry and he ended up digging his own father's grave.
In 2000, Benedict wrote and directed his first screenplay, Cahoots, and has since written many articles for magazines and websites. Often controversial and highly critical of Hollywood, he has lambasted many films and television trends; his most famous, perhaps, was his reaction to the new Battlestar Galactica. He now claims to be "semi-retired" from acting, but still does the occasional film role.
In 2007, he appeared on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother at the urging of his two youngest sons, and
finished third overall. Although he claimed to have made a few good friends while filming, he has been quoted as saying the decision to do the reality show was "a mistake." Dirk's son, Roland, however, now lives in the UK and plays soccer professionally for Gillingham.
When asked if he was proud of his acting career by a reporter, he replied, "No. I'm proud of only two things in my life: first, my children and second, my books."
So, here he is, a retro-hunk, if you will.........
