All this talk of the (possible) A-Team movie has me feeling very nostalgic. Dirk Benedict was my first crush EVER. I couldn't believe, after checking the list, that he hadn't been done before, so I decided to wade through my array of photos and use him for this week's hunk.

Dirk Benedict (born Dirk Niewoehner on March 1, 1945) is an American movie, television and stage actor, perhaps best known for playing the characters Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck in "The A-Team" television series and Lieutenant Starbuck in the original "Battlestar Galactica" film and television series. He was born in Helena, Montana, and grew up in White Sulphur Springs, Montana.

One of his first big breaks as an actor came when he landed a role with the Broadway production of Butterflies are Free. When the New York run ended, he joined the touring production, which did a few performances in Hawaii. While there, he was cast as a guest actor on "Hawaii Five-O." That role led to him being cast in the low-budget horror film, Sssss!. He then was cast as the psychotic husband of Twiggy in W, and the next year, landed a lead role in the police series, "Chopper One." Less than four years later, in 1978, he landed the role of Starbuck on the original "Battlestar Galactica." The show went off the air a year later and Dirk went on to do numerous low-budget films as well as numerous guest appearances on various TV shows. In 1983, he was cast as Templeton "Faceman" Peck on "The A-Team."

After The A-Team, Dirk wrote two auto-biographical novels, Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy, and And Then We Went Fishing. In the first book, he detailed how his strict following of the Macrobiotic lifestyle cured him of cancer. It was in this second book that he described his own dedication to fatherhood (he was awarded sole custody of his two young sons), and contrasted it with his own father, who died when Dirk was 18. His parents had divorced when he was a teenager, due to the extreme domestic violence that occured in the household. One night, his father returned and nearly beat Dirk's mother to death. Dirk's older brother saved their mother's life by fatally shooting the man inside their Montana home. Ironically, Dirk's summer job that year was working in the small town's cemetry and he ended up digging his own father's grave.

In 2000, Benedict wrote and directed his first screenplay, Cahoots, and has since written many articles for magazines and websites. Often controversial and highly critical of Hollywood, he has lambasted many films and television trends; his most famous, perhaps, was his reaction to the new Battlestar Galactica. He now claims to be "semi-retired" from acting, but still does the occasional film role.

In 2007, he appeared on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother at the urging of his two youngest sons, and
finished third overall. Although he claimed to have made a few good friends while filming, he has been quoted as saying the decision to do the reality show was "a mistake." Dirk's son, Roland, however, now lives in the UK and plays soccer professionally for Gillingham.

When asked if he was proud of his acting career by a reporter, he replied, "No. I'm proud of only two things in my life: first, my children and second, my books."

So, here he is, a retro-hunk, if you will.........

Sssss! (what moron thought that would be a good title?)

Doh....forgot to mention.... due to the constant interference from real life (that bastard!), we have lost a couple of our regulars on the HUNK rotation, so if anyone wants to sign up, just let me know. You'll only have to do it once a month.

So far, we have
PKTrekGirl (are you still available?)
RJ Diogenes
HighTeeHeller
auntiehill
WillsBabe

Let me know if you'd like to join us (by PM) and I'll let you know when your week comes up. Dirk, btw, is Hunk #112. If anyone wants the complete list, just let me know.

OH...and of course, I gave him a thumbs up!

Other than being completely confused because you've put the date as the 11th April, I give Dirk a thumbs up. Possibly my first TV crush :)

^Whoops! I think I've spent too much time in front of the computer today. Time is actually starting to go backwards.

Perhaps a kind-hearted Mod can fix it for me...when they quit laughing.

Thumbs up. I had some vague interest in him as a kid. I still find him attractive in a bygone-era kind of way!

^that does seem to be how most the A-Team fan goes: you're a Face girl or a Murdock girl.

Murdock got all the funny lines, but there's just something about Dirk............sigh........ I suppose you never get over your first crush.

But that's exactly it! If he isn't funny, he's probably only pretty. But when he makes me laugh he becomes sexy.

Although I surely hope to be quite over my first crush. There's just something about David Hasselhoff I don't want to hold on to anymore.

 ^Sweet Zombie Jesus.

I never liked him, not when I was a kid, and certainly not now.

If anyone puts the Hoff up on the Hunk thread, I hope they include a "BARF" option.

Funny is important, but not required. I mean, I LOVE Lou Costello and he never ceased to make me laugh, but sexy, he was NOT.

One thing I can say about the original Battlestar Galactica is that it had a very good cast. Dirk Benedict was cool. I'll give him a Thumbs Up. :bolian:

I used to have a picture of him from the very bad Linda Blair film (a tad redundant, eh?) "Ruckus." He was GORGEOUS in it. I wish I still had a copy of that.

It's not my fault! I was young! Impressionable! And in Germany. :(

For me the truth is somewhere in between, I think. Funny doesn't necessarily mean handsome, but pretty isn't immediately sexy. Funny plays a big role for me.

Oh YES!!! This is so true for me as well. I loved A Team's Murdoch. Hmm, maybe we should have Dwight Schultz in a poll?

Anyway, back to this week's hunk - sure, thumbs up! Loved him in the original Galactica. :techman:

Where was THIS pic? :p

starbucksz.jpg

That was the special Sciffy did either before the BSG mini or the series. Scuttlebutt is that Dirk was a total asshole to Katie.

And I had a crush on him before I even knew what a crush was. :D Really liked him until the story about this meeting of the 2 Starbucks circulated.
