Hunger Games casting news

What I don't get is why the Hunger Games were instituted, but I imagine the movie will explain that.
It's very clear in the books -- and it's not much of a spoiler to say:

The Games were instituted as a means for the central governing power (the people commanding the White Suit Guards in the trailer) to symbolically exert control over the Districts which had rebelled and were subsequently "quelled" by a totalitarian crackdown.

Oh okay, they went for the obvious bread & circuses route. I thought maybe that was a distraction and there was a "real" reason for the Games that would be a surprise twist. I won't wait around for that, then.

Forcing 24 random kids to fight to the death every year doesn't seem like a very good collective punishment, to me. I mean, you can expect to loose more children than that from car accidents alone.

If you really want a collective punishment big enough to be felt you should have each district send at least two thousand children, possibly more depending on population.

Twenty-four thousand kids fighting to the death every year, that something that seems pointlessly horrifying.

Well, there is a surprise twist, of a sort, in the Capital's 'game'. That's not important to the first book/film though.

Based on how small each of the Disticts seem to be, I would imagine that would wipe out Panem's population in pretty short order. I think the idea is that the capital is also trying to say "Look at what we can do. Don't push us."

I finished reading all three books a few days back. Did it over three days!

I thought the first was the best, the second was good, and the third was disappointing. I didn't like the direction that the author decided to take the main character. It seems nearly all authors still have trouble finishing their trilogies strongly. I'm still glad I read them though.

I have no clue how they are going to split the third book into two movies. The people behind the Harry Potter and Twilight movies were barely able to get away with it since those books were already so long, but don't think it will work for Mockingjay, all three books are pretty much the same in length.

I understand they have to portray Jennifer as a kid but that just looks bad. I'm planning on doing a re-read of the books pretty soon. Probably starting next month.

i've only read the first book thus far, which i thought was great. i think i may be getting the other two for Christmas.

'Hunger Games' could be a game changer for Lions Gate

A successful "Hunger Games" franchise could transform the studio, much as "Twilight" did rival Summit Entertainment, by providing reliable income for years from box-office, DVD and digital sales as well as television licensing and merchandise.

But launching such a movie series won't come cheap. With a budget of nearly $100 million, the first film alone is the costliest production ever for Santa Monica-based Lions Gate, which is best known for low-budget genre fare such as "Saw" and Tyler Perry's "Madea" films along with the occasional prestige movie like "Precious." The studio's movie business is in need of a jump-start, having weathered a number of flops since last year.

With so much at stake, "Hunger Games" will likely be the hottest topic of conversation as investors gather for Lions Gate's annual meeting Tuesday in Toronto.

"There are three things on Lions Gate investors' minds for...

I thought that was an interesting read. Lionsgate has really high hopes for this movie which is why they increased the budget so much. I hope this film really takes off and can become the next Potter or Twilight.
