Hunger Games casting news

I agree with everyone else about Lenny Kravitz, who is about 20 years older than I pictured Cinna. (I'd imagined someone more like Lee Pace, or maybe the actor who portrayed Maecenas on Rome, and even they're both a bit on the too-old side.)

I know they've just started filming now, but given that the movie's supposed to come out in March, I wonder when they'll show a trailer for it. I'm kind of hoping that there would be at least a teaser with Deathly Hallows in July.

As for the "Katniss acting for the cameras" part, I wonder if they'd consider cutting to outside of the arena (say, to show Haymitch hoping that Katniss will understand the implicit message in the pot of broth.) I doubt it, but it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

I haven't read all the posts yet, but if Ms. Collins is ok with Jennifer Lawrence being cast as Katniss, then who am I to argue? :)
As far as her weight is concerned, I am not worried about that. once she starts training for this part, she will trim down and look more the part than she does now.
Her hair color can be changed with dye, and contacts work for eye color(although I didn't notice if those were needed). As far as her skin color, well as stated before, apparently Ms. Collins is ok with this casting.

BTW-I did read the series, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The only problem I can see with casting 'olderish' actors is that if they plan on making all 3 books into movies, these characters are going to be alot older come the last movie. Unless they do the LOTR thing and make all 3 at once but release them at different times.

Looking forward to seeing how this all pans out :)

Here's a new piece of news: they're considering splitting the trilogy into four films.

I have to admit, I probably shouldn't be surprised, considering it's been a trend with other YA franchises, but I have no idea where the split would take place. The first book has to be filmed as a single movie, and I have no idea where you'd split Catching Fire or Mockingjay.

Any break in Catching Fire would have to be at the point where Katniss re-enters the arena, the last time she sees Cinna; I can't imagine them splitting it anywhere else. And Mockingjay, if split, would have to occur when Katniss & Co. go off on their "76th Hunger Games" suicide mission, but I don't think the first half of Mockingjay is strong enough to support a movie on its own. Perhaps they'll try to add material between books 2 and 3? These books just don't seem amenable to splicing into 4 pieces.

Lionsgate announced today that they've slated the second movie, Catching Fire, for a release date of November 22, 2013.

Looks pretty good. Love that those early shots of the forest have a nicely eerie, documentary-style feel, and don't come across too glossy and fake.

I've liked the Katniss promo shots, but seeing her in action looked a bit underwhelming. Great atmospherics, though. And that four-note melody at the end sent shivers up my spine.

Wow, even better than I was expecting! We barely saw any of the actual Arena, and it was still intense as hell. I'd say that's a pretty good sign.

I've not read any of the books, don't know the story, but this does look like it could be interesting.

Yeah, that's a pretty cool trailer!

I'm not sure it's all that understandable for someone who's unfamiliar with the source material, though.

As someone who is only tangentially familiar with the source material (i.e., very brief, couple-line synopses), I think it was understandable enough to get someone curious about the film. The basic was there (young people forced to fight in a televised so-called "game", apparently for their communities, and chosen by random lot), and I think that's sufficient. A full understanding as to why these individuals are subjected to these games can, of course, come by actually watching the film.

I do own an eBook copy of the first novel, though haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I might do that shortly before the film comes out.

I've never read the books, but I get the basic idea from that trailer (very exciting looking!) What I don't get is why the Hunger Games were instituted, but I imagine the movie will explain that.

I think the trailer looks great. I really like the look of it, particularly in District 12. Only complaint...would have liked to have seen more of Harrelson as Haymitch. But I think they did a great job setting up the film without showing a whole lot from the Games themselves.

I read the books over the summer and I really enjoyed them.
