Humans(2015) TV series

I think a better analogy than TV would be a teddy bear, kids very much anthropomorphise cuddly toys and that’s what Anita is, half TV half dolly!

^Which doesn't make sense for the manufacturers. They presumably want people to upgrade every so often so creating robots that all have unique and individual looks and personalities basically encourages families (kids in particular) to grow very attached to them (Hurt's character is also apparently emotionally connected to his bot).

Far better to have a standard male and female model. It also makes identifying them much easier. Why create robots that can slip into society unnoticed with the simple addition of some contact lenses?

I think there's a number of things in this show that require a suspension of disbelief.

But that's not really the fault of this show though, that would be the fault of the original Swedish show and the past 50+ years of these kinds of stories.

I really enjoyed the pilot. It'll be interesting to see an ongoing series get to really delve deeper into these issues than some of the movies that dealt with similar ideas.
I'm especially curious to learn more about Leo and what exactly his relationship is to the conscious synths.

There's a level of suspension of disbelief in most sci-fi, if anything the replicants in Blade Runner are even more human looking, they don’t even need the contacts. A standard male and female model is a good idea in one respect, but commercialism is about offering people the widest possible choice available, which is why we don’t all drive black Ford Model-Ts. There’s also the uncanny valley to consider, the more human they look the more appealing they’re going to be, and the main reason Niska can blend in isn’t about the contacts, it’s about her attitude, she walks and talks like a human, not a synth. Stick contacts in Rita and she’ll still quite obviously be a synth.

I wonder whether there are any synth police officers? I guess given the Asimov protocols that might make it unlikely, certainly that would preclude synth soldiers (though I can’t imagine most governments wouldn’t want an army of synthetic soldiers, the increasing reliance on drones shows that.)

^Apparently there are.

Starting to pick up some pace now. The twist right at the end was intriguing. If she's a synth then she's a little more advanced than any of the others, but what was she pulling out of her mouth? My first thought was that it was all the food and drink she pretends to consume throughout the day but it was mostly liquid and blue so not sure.

That was a genuine surprise, although I had thought there was something a little off about her (plus her hairstyle did remind me of Lal, Data's daughter). I was guessing the contents of the bag were all the scotch they'd been drinking, I can't recall if we saw them eat?

I'm equally intrigued as to just who/what Colin Morgan's character is, a clone body with synth insides.

I did like Niska's rampage in the smash club, but even with superior reflexes and strength I'm surprised the humans weren't able to put up a fight (especially given there were guns amongst the weapons upstairs).

It's getting more interesting by the week.

I suspected she was a synth from the start, she was too measured in her speech at times. I do wonder if this is going to be like NuBSG where you end up waiting to see who is the next synth. That might be interesting.

The pace and style is great and the cast is fantastic. I'm really liking the mother now. Niska's rampage was so.. quiet. The whole show is strangely quiet.

Ha ha loved the twist this week. That was truly a moment like Diana in V. Gemma Chan's beautifully understated performance is the stand-out thing to watch and how she's gradually drawing in Catherine Parkinson's character. The show is also shining an uncomfortable light on men's tendency to objectify women in a way I haven't seen done before. It's subtle and uncomfortably creepy. You can almost hear the fembots' silent screams.

There is definitely a story element about how men objectify women, the lads wanting to take the synth upstairs was disturbing, and sadly completely expected, but what do people expect when every synth comes with an ‘adult mode’?. That said both sexes seem to objectify the synths to some extent, after all both male and female models have been designed to be attractive, take the model the copper’s disabled wife has. There’s definitely a narrative thread about human obsolescence going on. Teenagers don’t see the point when synths have taken so many jobs. The copper sees his wife with a more perfect husband than he can ever be (and though he doesn’t know it he’s partnered with a synth who’s a better copper than he can ever be as well), while Katherine Parkinson sees a woman who is potentially a better wife and mother than herself.

Those in the smash club may have been portrayed in quite an unfavourable light, but I have to wonder whose side I’d be on if/when this kind of world ever came to pass? If the synths can develop consciousness then we’re talking about a singularity, and after that all bets for humanity are off, although maybe we will just get a nice new life as pets?

I’m still wondering if the synths have true AI, or whether the inventor downloaded human consciousness into them? Although some seem more artificial than others.

The smash club is the equivalent of super violent video games that cause an uproar. It's not people, does it matter?

but what do people expect when every synth comes with an ‘adult mode’?./

If they wanted to avoid this they would all be Ken and Barbie "down there".

And the adult ones with actual functioning genitalia would be in sex clubs only, not in houses waiting for activation.

Unfortunately the synths would still have mouths.

Yeah it is an odd thing, you wouldn't think models like that would be sold into a home environment.

I don't mind this so far, but I wish there were some characters that didn't seem so miserable all the time!

Also, whilst they didn't use the Czech pronunciation, did anyone else notice surname of Paul Kaye's character is Capek...as in Karel Capek?

It seems an obvious nod to use that name in a robot story, but I'm wondering if there is any significance to giving it to that particular character...

Good point, I think the cheeriest characters are probably the little girl and synthcop! Oh and maybe Max who always seems to be smiling (and who also seems to be the most robotic of the rogue synths, not sure if there's anything in that?)

Agreed. After that there was only really Mr Capek (can't remember the character's first name).

More suspension of disbelief required. Some of these issues could be resolved with more backstory but we're not gonna get that so I guess a lot of it is going to feel counter intuitive and lacking in authenticity.

Perhaps when the designers/creators come into it more, they'll expand upon the reasons for anatomically accurate bots and such but I dunno. Where are the anti-AI people? Groups who view the machines as slaves in need of liberation.

I'm not sure if setting it in an alternative reality was wise as this just brings up more questions. These people behave as though they've never seen a robot movie in their lives.

Are you guys talking about stuff in later episodes that have aired in the UK, but not US? If so could you please put it in spoiler code, we're only on episode 2 in the US. Or would you prefer I just set up a second US, no UK spoilers thread?

When the brother knocks back the super cute girl at the party who wants to take him up to her room because "there is someone else" is he actually talking about the synth?!!

I'm 99% certain yup!
