Human Bedwarmers?

Nothing puts me to sleep faster than a complete stranger (who probably feels just as awkward about it as you do) dressed up like they're working in a clean-room hopping into bed and snuggling up next to me for five minutes. :wtf:

I could see this going wrong in so many ways, like if a guest is drunk and decides to get a little frisky or something, or if an employee gets wood unintentionally and some lady freaks out about it.

It was very common in England in the 19th century, for those who employed maids and servants. Bed warming was an expected service.

But that was partly due to the lack of central heating, poorly insulated homes, and no double glazed windows at that time, which no doubt made bedrooms much colder than the lounges, where the log fires would be roaring away.

I remember my grandmother telling me about when she was young, their bedroom was freezing. It was not uncommon in the middle of winter to wake up in the morning and find the glass of water at your bedside had frozen solid.

They would pile all sorts of stuff onto the bed to keep warm at night: clothing, blankets, towels, even the rugs off the floor.

See, I would have just slept where the fire was.

But that's just me, I suppose.

By the morning the fire would have gone out, and the downstairs would be freezing too.

Also, you'd have to think of the fuel cost. The economics of running an average home was a lot simpler in the 19th century. Fuel for the fire may cost 1/3 of your income. Food may cost you another 1/3. So if you intend to burn your fire through the night too, then you don't have the money to feed your family.

A well insulated bed was the norm, because it was simple but effective, and kept people cosy without costing anything.

"Really honey, it's her job... err, that isn't what I meant.."
