Huge Mistake

Possible Explanation

"As to the origins of this video, we can now say with certainty that it was originally created for the ABC summer replacement series, Malibu-U, hosted by "Ozzie And Harriet" TV star, Ricky Nelson. The show was a beachy version of American Bandstand, with musical guests who all performed on the sand. In the episode featuring Nimoy (as well as Mrs. Miller and The Buffalo Springfield!), the Bilbo clip was introduced by Ricky as a musical number designed to push your funny button. So for those of you who have seen the video and said, "Was he serious?!", the answer is, no, he wasn't. It's supposed to make you laugh."

Huh. So it wasn't Satan, but Ricky Nelson?

I'd almost rather it was Satan.

The link also contains the original, full-length version, of the song and video, "with an introduction to the song, complete instrumental break, and the ending in its entirety."

Dear, sweet muscular Jesus, I'm tempted to click the link.

Joe, Catholic
Now you got me doing it.

As it turns out, Erin Gray (somewhat popular around here among posters of a certain age, if I'm not mistaken) was one of the regular dancers on the Malibu U program. It is not known whether she was one of those who participated in the "Bilbo Baggins" video.

I'm sure we'll get word on that shortly.

My teenage years were spent in intensive study of Erin Gray's body.

She must have been off work that day.

Joe, beady-beady-beady

I'm just back from listening to the extended version.

I've never been happy to be half-deaf, but today, I am.

If you look at the rest of the site, they list albums by Mr. Nimoy, including one that has the song "I Walk The Line" on it.

I must hear this.

Joe, dumb

Now all we have to do is find a video of Shatner 'preforming' Lucy In The Sky to add to this collection, or better yet 'Rocket.... Man....'

I'm trying to figure out what key Nimoy is singing in.

I think it's L minor.

Joe, tone deaf

"He riddled with Gollum"

Can you use riddled as a verb in that context? :wtf:

I've never read the books. I certainly dont remember any riddling in the movies. I cant help but envision Frank Gorshin taking the piss somewhere in middle earth, dancing about in a puzzle factory or something...

Ker-pow...

I had to listen to much of my Moody Blues collection to get that gawdawful song out of my brain.

**walks off humming "Thinking is the Best Way to Travel".** :)

The song is about BILBO, not Frodo. Bilbo riddled with Gollum when he first FOUND the One Ring in the original book The Hobbit.

(You DID know the Lord of the Rings trilogy was a sequel series, right?) :)

I didn't realize there were people who didn't suppose it was meant to be funny. I can't see how to read the emotional tone of the production any other way.

ROFLMAO! I'd never heard of this before. I watched about 20 seconds of the youtube (10 seconds with the sound on). That was enough. I did have to listen to some real music real fast to get it off my mind, though.

Oh, no you don't, pookha. You're an evil imp. I'm not clicking on that link. Nosirreebob. Nope. Never.

I think he meant it to be funny in a "how cutesy" manner, not funny in a "what a complete and total douchebag" manner.

Please click on the "twinkle" link Pookha put up, to see what Nimoy's like when he's serious.

Joe, not liable for damages

Okay, now I really do need to listen to Shat-ner 'preform' a song just to get both 'Bilbo' and 'Twinkle' out of my skull ;)

< Outpost pulls out his vinyl version of In Search Of The Lost Chord, which hasn't been played for years, and cranks it up. "Timothy Leary's dead/No, no-no-no, he's outside looking in..." >
