How would Kirk have coped with meeting Q?

Q was completely irresponsible; let us not forget he was the one who exposed mankind/the Federation to the Borg ("Q Who") long before they were ever ready to deal with that threat. All loss of life suffered at the hands of the Borg is all Q's fault, and he was hardly apologetic about it, nor did he step in before or during the events of "The Best of Both Worlds" to correct his sadistic need for ass-kissing / gameplaying.
So, Gary, you think you could take Q?

Spock spends 20 minutes analyzing Q's energy signature and creates a device that neutralizes Q's power leaving him powerless. At this point Kirk and Q engage in fisticuffs resulting in Kirk's jersey ripping revealing his manly chest and giving Kirk the chance to speechify that while humans are not perfect, we have made great progress and will continue to do so. Spock then engages the second part of his solution, trapping Q in another dimension.

I remember reading in some early TOS novel that Trelane was a child Organian, or possibly mere speculation that he was. But it seems highly unlikely that Trelane could be both a baby Organian and a baby Q, so maybe fans should admit that their attractive speculations should be considered mere speculations and not try to elevate them to the level of fanon, let alone canon, prematurely.

I thought it was pretty obvious with my statement (I swear!) that it was speculative joking. I like the idea, of course, especially if going directly from Squire to Farpoint, but obviously its head canon.

Which involves the engines and some miracle tech work from Scotty to get the job done?

We know what happens when Spock meets Q.

Look at it this way: he was only a few days into his transformation, and he was creating life-giving nature out of a barren wasteland. That made him not only powerful, but with his human ego, rather frightening. The way Mitchell was growing, I would not put it past him to think the Q out of existence.

But, to be fair, he got his powers removed for a time by a woman who had just manifested powers a few scant hours earlier. ;)

With all of these super powerful aliens (Q, Organians, Mitchell, Trelane, Charlie) I wonder if there is some mechanism (that includes the forces of the barrier) that enables this kind of evolution/transformation or the abilitiy to tap into that power source?

Whether there is or was not I'm sure the Enterprise and other ships were adequately shielded before entering the barrier for a second time! :techman:
