Sigh... this thread... I won't lose sleep if it's locked.
Beverly uses the term suduction, not rape.
I don't recall Beverly feeling assaulted by Ronin.
That's sounds like an expression of violation to me, especially the way she said itCrusher said:You've been using me... Nana... my whole family... for centuries!
It's fair to point out that there's an edited out line from the original script & even looks to be cut from the production as wellCrusher said:Whatever else he might have done... he made her very happy.
So then "Happy"? or sedated? How is that any different than forcing impairment, like drunkenness, in order to make someone "Happy" about having no control over being used? Even without that line in the final cut, it's pretty evident that Beverly is not behaving like herself, under his influence, which is physiologically & probably psychological intrusive.Crusher said:I imagine he took human form and seduced her the same way he did me. He had some sort of hypnotic... almost telepathic control.
That's sad.Sigh... this thread... I won't lose sleep if it's locked.
That's sad.
We're just having a discussion.![]()
Her lily hand her rosy cheek lies under,How much is there to discuss when rape is categorized as romance?
That's sort of how I see it too. I'd never have categorized it as rape, not because it is any less egregious, but because it is not a power dynamic masquerading in a sexual context, like real rape. It's misdiagnosing. It's certainly abuse, & for those who consider Picard's trip to Kataan a mind rape, then this sort of fits that category as well, in that there's a mind control, which uses loving emotions to achieve its result, & there's definitely a sexual gratification aspect being used for a carrot, but to define it at its most basic plot function, it's just another Star Trek creature feeding on humanoidsIt's been awhile since I saw the ep but I forgot why the alien was trapped in the candle lamp thing. Was his need to connect to the Howard women essential to his survival in some way? We are talking about a non-humanoid alien that only takes human form so I am not exactly sure what exactly makes such a lifeform tick. I do recall that if the thingy he went out he would die so we are talking about him having a motive beyond love to make sure they keep that thingy continuing to operate. He might be more like a parasite type of creature when you think about it.

Lying that you're in finance to get laid isn't the same thing as using mind control. What he did is more like using roofies.
In Elaan of Troyius, does anyone feel that the Dohlman raped Captain Kirk. The episode did imply that they had sex.
grandma wouldn't have wanted to surrender the candle to her daughter.I've always wondered about Beverly's mom.
Yep, granny only gave the candle away because she happened to have died.grandma wouldn't have wanted to surrender the candle to her daughter.
Isn't 100 years an unusually low lifespan for a 24th century human?Think about it. The episode frames Ronin as this being that sucks the life force from the woman of the Howard family. But Felisa Howard got to live to 100, which is not a bad innings.

I've always wondered about Beverly's mom. This alien attached it to her grandma but never went after her mom? I

TROI: How well do you remember your mother?
CRUSHER: Very well. I loved her very much. I can remember her face smiling down at me, and I can remember the sound of her voice and her scent. But mostly I remember Nana, who raised me after my mother died.
I agree with Christopher about this. Ronan was a creep. He could have got his plasma power fix in any number of ways (including the colony's weather system) and still he chose to go after the Howard women for sport. For generations. That's serial. How about the fact that he was a rapist? It horrifies me that anyone sees "Sub Rosa" as romance rather than assault, given the complete lack of consent involved.
