How to Train Your Dragon

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Love the av, by the way. And I love Spirit too!

thanks!
I would love to see it again in 3d but man they just raised the ticket prices for 3d in my area :scream: ($17 bucks for Imax 3d, $15 for Real 3d which is what I saw it in, before that it was only $12 for either format) & I really dont know if I should shell out for it again.

what did you all think of the fact that they had
Hiccup lose his leg? pretty ballsy I thought!

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

^ That's when you know for certain it's not Disney. I agree with your comment, btw.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

^I thought so, too. But it was a great way to get across the sense of danger and the consequences. Not something you usually get in children's animated films, so I thought it was a gutsy move, too.

That was part of a theme in the movie I really loved. Hiccup shooting down Toothless and maiming him was symbolic of how the violence between the villagers and dragons was damaging everyone. But when they worked together they could fly. Hiccup then losing his leg was symbolic of how far he'd go to help his former enemy, and reinforced how much they needed each other to fly.

Basically I thought it was really beautiful because of the way it worked within the story.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

I think it's the best reviewed (weighted) movie of the year so far at Rottentomatoes.com -- 98%.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Has anyone else seen this yet?

The bonus of having a kid, I get to see all those awesome movies made for them without walking into the cinema alone for a matinee... :alienblush:

But I didn't get to see this. Yet. In the queue at the cinema, four groups of people away from the ticket booth and my little girl decides no Dragons, just some bloody Frogs... :vulcan:

yeah, I also thought it was clever how they

sort of "break in" to the audience & especially kids, what was to happen later to Hiccup, with the character of the blacksmith(I think that's what he was) who was already an amputee.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Perhaps I missed the Joke, (God knows that's happened before) but since people are not badmouthing the movie, isn't the title "How to Train Your Dragon?"

I might just go see this given the reviews. Seems like something I might enjoy.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Great Movie.... absolutely loved it.... it reminded me of the universe of Naomi Novik who wrote Temeraire could reside in.

There is no joke. The OP made a typo in the thread title. We lowly posters can't change thread titles once they're posted, only a mod can. And we're waiting for Neroon to see this, but he's busy watching Doctor Who. :P

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Whenever I go see a Kids movie, I always have doubts on if I will really enjoy it, other than if it's a Pixar film. That's probably why I haven't seen movies like Ice Age or Kung-Fu Panda (But with Pablo Sandoval sweeping San Francisco the last few years I might need to see it now). I was skeptical about this one, but after hearing the reviews and critics, I decided to go see it, and to see it in 3D

Boy I'm glad I did. What a wonderful movie this was, full of fantasy and emotional moments and great scenes. Granted, this is one of those "loser becomes the hero" type movies (Is that really a spoiler for movies like these anymore?) but how we got to that point was just really well done. The animation was gorgeous, and different Dragons were creative, and just the emotion and fantastical tone of this movie was beautiful. In fact, I would say this movie upped Avatar in that the visuals were good, but so was the story. Avatar's story was not good, but back to Dragon. Really liked the characters (Even though I couldn't spot Tennant), and really liked Furguson's character. I would say this is a movie if you have kids, take them, but if you don't have kids, see it anyway. This is a movie that takes you from reality and lets you escape for a few hours. It's a fun film, and one of the best films I've seen this year.

As for the 3D aspect, this was the first time I saw any film with the 3D craze. I have to say I was a little disappointed. I feel like a lot of the visuals would have been equally beautiful in 2D and there was only one scene were the 3D really added anything. That was the scene were Astrid and Hiccup were riding Toothless (Loved that name for the dragon by the way ;) ) for the first time and just the visuals were absolutely stunning. I actually choked up during that scene because of how beautiful everything looked. I might go see more 3D films (Like Toy Story) but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

^^ It depends on the movie. Even more than Avatar, my favorite 3D experience so far was Monsters vs Aliens.

For what it's worth, I might recommend Kung-Fu Panda. Yeah, it looks stereotypical with Jack Black starring, etc. But it's actually a genuine and loving tribute to martial arts films. The character development is authentic and pretty emotional. And it avoids some stereotypical attributes of all modern films, such as the fact that there is no romance shoe-horned in for the hero. Finally, the story has a big twist on a stereotypical fantasy / martial arts trope that I appreciated and heavily undercuts its own premise (that of someone becoming the hero because they're special and chosen).

It's a movie a ton of people overlooked, understandably enough, because its marketing looks like another Shrek at first glance.

^ I liked it, too. The characters in Kung Fu Panda are very well done and the plot is a little more sophisticated (as Kaijima explained rather well), although still light-hearted enough for most kids to enjoy.

^ I saw it a few days ago & I liked it until the last fight b/w Po & the villain. I didnt like how everything was treated as a joke(the final fight, Shi Fu's "death")-typical DW style. I would have liked to see more of the Furious Five than what we got in the film too.

I'm kind of blown away that so many people seem to really love this film...

Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike it or anything, I thought it was pretty decent. A solid B grade, nothing more.

^well I did think there were some problems with it. The teen characters other than Hiccup were pretty meh & I hated that all the teens acted so contemporary. And I didnt buy how the whole village ostricized Hiccup. It seemed so overdone, & like they did it just b/c the story needed Hiccup to be an outcast. And Astrid went from hating dragons to accepting them a little too quickly. But I guess Im letting it slide b/c so much of it I did like & b/c I was surprised at how un-Dreamworks like the movie was.
