How to Train Your Dragon

Lapis Exilis

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I went to see this with my nephews, as I have gone to see every awful kid's movie that has come down the pike. Was I surprised to discover - this movie is FANTASTIC!

Now, granted I like dragons, but that didn't make me give Eragon a glowing review. How to Tame... though is a good story with a likeable main character, humor, great art direction and an edge-of-your-seat climax with spectacular visuals and a satisfying (if somewhat predictable) emotional kick.

Has anyone else seen this yet?

ETA: I loved it, but apparently I don't know the correct title - which is How to Train Your Dragon. Which I discovered when I looked it up on Rotten tomatoes where it is at a whopping 97% fresh.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Yeah the movie was excellent! Great CGI, great action, lots of different dragon species, good humor without being childish. It was like Kung Fu Panda but I dunno which one is better.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Oh, it gets better.

1 - It's written and directed by Chris Sanders. Aka, the creator of STITCH!

2 - David Tennant is one of the voices.

I've only seen it twice, but plan on seeing it again, and will own the dvd the day it's released.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

My 5 year old loved it, we got a Toothless figurine at the snackbar and it hasn't been out of his hands since Saturday, he even sleeps with it.

I quite enjoyed it. I was a bit puzzled by the Scottish (?) accents, but other than that it was great fun. I'm sure it was even better in 3d (my 5 year old doesn't like 3d yet).

Actually found it not quite predictable, a couple of places it took a darker turn that I wasn't expecting for a kid's movie.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

I plan to watch it too & it will be the first DW film Ive seen since Madagascar(which I thought was horrid & made me swear off any DW films after.) Ive heard good things about this one, that its not your typical DW pop culture infested drivel. I do wonder how much of that was influenced by the fact that Chris Sanders(who directed one of the best of Disneys 2000's era films, Lilo & Stitch) worked on it...

BTW anyone heard the story of why Sanders is working for Dreamworks now? Makes me wonder about Jon Lasseter sometimes. :(

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

I really liked it; it's very sweet, but still funny and exciting. I'd give it a B+.

I, too, was amused by the...um...Scottish? Vikings, but what the hey. Any time I can hear Craig Ferguson and Gerard Butler, I'll take it.

And "Toothless" the dragon is very cat-like, and very cute---in a potentially lethal kind of way.

^Funny you should mention Chris Sanders, meloncholymecha, because the dragon did remind me a little of Stitch.

I saw it in Croatian, so I didn't get to hear him.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

I had no idea which one was Tennant. He was the last cast member listed in the credits so I think it was a bit role.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

It was pretty good... But the different dragon 'styles' really bothered me.

It's as if they had separate artists drawing each species of dragon, with no communication between them. At all. It just didn't seem to all fit in the same world.

But the flying scenes were great. And surprisingly subtle 3D.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

^that's one of the things that initially turned me off when I saw the trailer, the dragon designs were too cutesy looking, like Pokemon (& I immediately thought of Stitch when I saw Toothless.)

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

best Dreamworks animated film since Spirit(yes the 2d horse movie.)
this is a must see in 3d, the flight sequences are amazing! :techman:

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Yep. The art direction is not at all what the posters lead you to expect. I'm going to see it at least once more in the theaters. It's that good.

Love the av, by the way. And I love Spirit too!

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Saw this last week. Made a special trip to see it because a friend of mine who doesn't really gush about movies and doesn't go that often pretty much beat me over the head with praise and adulation for it.

I was not disappointed and I would in fact like to see it again.

Very, very well done.

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Yep agreed with everyone, I usually hate these kids cartoon movies, and the wifey usually takes them, but i decided to go with them this time...and wow...I was actually pretty engrossed in the story!

Really liked it!

Re: How to Tame Your Dragon

Awesome movie, very exciting and moving. I saw it in a theatre full of kids (Easter afternoon showing), and they were so taken you could hear a mosquito fly in the room. Excellent entertainment and a beautiful story.
