How to stay alive in Multiplayer?

Being more of a single player person for the games I've got I've decided to recently try out multiplayer. I've got the last 4 CoD games and the most recent Medal of Honor and I was trying out the multiplayer and all I can say is, at times, it can be intense.

When you're a noob like me how exactly do you manage to stay alive long enough to gain skill points as at the moment my points are in the low hundreds, which I've noticed is way low compared to others, and my kill stats are barely in the teens. Usually I can stay alive for a good 10mins, if I find manage to find a good cover spot, but then someone'll come up behind and hit me with their knive or manage to get a shot off at me from round a corner. Also I've noticed that other players tend to move faster, fast enough where they can run up to, kill you and run off again without a sweat.

So any tips on how to get good in multiplayer, or at least good enough to get some major skill points?

I don't, I just get my ass shot off by 15 year olds, and accept that it will be the best my old tired fingers can manage. If my kills are in the teens I consider it a victory.

If you can, try some multiplayer with bots. I was playing Call of Duty: Black Ops over the weekend, and it has bots. These days, bots are pretty elaborate and I was amazed that they seem to act like real players would, so it makes for good practice, without the ridicule of being online. I kind of preferred this to being online, to be honest.

A very useful training tip.
Otherwise-make some friends and play with them regularly.
Your survival rate will go way up, I guarantee it.
I'm a member of 4Rumboys.com as well as having a core group of(non-4Rummers) about 12 people I play with regularly. It makes a big difference. When you have questions-you have someone to ask who will steer you right, y'know? And someone to guard your back. It let's you concentrate on getting the other guy first. And that is the key to raising your score in MP.

BTW-people who regularly score 20+ in COD MP are probably playing out of their weight class on purpose. If you assemble a wicked team the game(s) tend to throw similar types at you...

Side note-if you are on Xbox take MOH back to gamestop while it still has a little re-sale value. It's garbage. The MP has an imbalanced design and a couple of severe flaws expert players can exploit.

With Black Ops, you can use the Combat Training mode to practice against bots, and get to know the maps. Best pieces of advice...

  • Know the maps; know the spawn areas so you know where people are likely to come from, know your surroundings, know the objectives (as in bomb sites and such).
  • Try out weapon and perk combinations and find something that works for you, or that works best for the game type you're playing.
  • Don't sprint around too much. You'll likely run into trouble fast, as it takes longer to raise your gun and fire when sprinting.
Other than that, it's just a case of improving and maintaining things like aim, reaction times, personal tactics...etc. All that comes with continued play. Don't get disheartened if you're getting beat a lot at first. I've been playing CoD MP since MW1, and it wasn't until World at War came out that I started to get a K/D ratio above 1.00. Now, after 4 years of the playing the games, I have a K/D ratio on Black Ops of 2.21, and rarely end a game with more deaths than kills.

I don't get what this means. I play CoD on XBL, and there's no choice who you're put into a game with. How exactly do people play "out of their weight class on purpose"? I regularly get 20+ kills in games I play on Black Ops, but that's regardless of whether I'm playing with relative noobs, or people who are a few prestige levels above me.

I don't play online versus much these days but when I do I normally get a positive K/D score so am happy enough. I am a cautious player but not a camper unless pinned in, I like to move around the map but i won't run n gun my way around chucking lives away so the opposition team can win easily.

I think the main reason for my style of play is the perk system = Heli's and all of that crap, which kills me more than actual players. Of course the MW 2 killcam lag doesn't help either, where on my screen I was round the corner but on the other dude's killcam I was still making my way round the corner.

Best thing to do is know the maps really because you can predict enemy movements on some.

keep moving. have a good gun you're used to. learn the maps. play a lot. play different game types - DOM/TDM/SAB/S&D/DEM etc. means you can learn things in one game type you might make use of in another.

on MW2, i played for 6 months before i started getting more than one or two kills a match. then i just 'magically' got better. i still have no idea how, but whilst some matches i can get 12, 15, or even 20 kills, others i get lucky if i get 4. sometimes it depends if you're playing against good players. i've had matches where the opposition have been as dumb as a bag of spanners and got 20+ kills, other times, the opposition's been god-like and i've been pissed off to only get 3 or 4 kills.

play Ground War a lot and you're bound to wind up getting more kills. or team tactical - fewer players more kill oppurtunities.

I tried mulitplayer, but got sick of it will rarely play it. I did hop on COD Black ops the other day on multi player and got 6 kills and that is more than I ever got. I figured I must have been playing against worse players than me.

If you play in MTDM and are a high Prestige you will often get placed with low-levels. Ditto if you assemble a bunch of pre-prestige low levels around you as a team, or even have a large disparity like you are P6 and your team is a bunch of P1s. That's "throwing " it. I play with comparable people (mid-Prestigers) and it matches us against tougher people. We never get a team of level 24s, for example-but I do if I go into MTDM alone.
Now, granted, some players CAN score like that regularly. It's rare, though, as it tends to go the way Capt Calhoun describes in his post-at least, in COD BOps. In MW2 I AM that guy averaging 20+ kills. 31 days playing time teaches you that. :)
But if you are with a good team the kills tend to farm out over a series of rounds amongst everyone. And the competition leans more towards your team's general skill level.

I used to play multiplayer a lot when it first came out and I sucked real bad, still do. I used to just hide in a good spot and pick people off one by one as they ran past. It's the pussy way out, but it works.

I don't play Call of Duty or Medal of Honour, but I do play other online games and I can give you a few general tips.

- Memorize the maps and important locations.
- Memorize the guns, weapons, reload times, etc. Know everything about the game.
- Don't aim with the mouse. When you see an enemy slightly to your right, don't jerk your mouse over to hit him. Instead use your WASD keys to align your sights.
- Don't play with n00bs or on n00b maps. If you're playing TF2 32 player 2fort or StarCraft money maps you're not going to learn how to play.
- Don't cheese. Yes, camping or hiding will definitely extend your life, but it will stagnate your skills. You need to play the game the way it's meant to be played if you want to get good. You have infinite lives -- don't be afraid to die if you're going to learn from it.
- Accept that before you get good you're going to die. A lot.

You know if this was a StarCraft II help topic I'd ask you to post a replay. It's rather hard to give specific advice to someone when you can't see how they play. More games should include replays.

Play Bad Company 2 instead. The maps are bigger, so you don't have to worry about the dudes who are cheesing you by camping/controlling the maps.
In CoD, it's especially egregious in objective based maps since all the spawns are always the same. You can find videos where dudes can get 200+ kills (with the chopper gunner) by just camping in one or two spots on the map.

If you have to stick with CoD, learning the map exploits is probably the first thing you want to do - do this by watching the showoff videos on youtube. You'll also want to pick up the perks you use for your preferred play style. Some can help you remain invisible while others help you run around and get close in range.

For someone new though, unless you have Light Weight Pro, never - never - use sprint. Forget that you can even sprint in the game and just walk slowly. This is important because it takes longer to bring up your aiming while you're sprinting. Those few seconds can mean life or death.

Good advice here. I also highly recommend games that allow use of bots to practice (or in some cases, as a replacement for multiplayer). It's an older game, but Unreal Tournament for 360 has this option as well.

The best advice is to stay on the move. The first thing I noticed about the other guys in a multiplayer that they moved FAST.

Choose strategic points, take a lot of cover and don't be afraid to move out of the cover.

You'll get better and better, trust me.

I have COD 3, 4, World At War, MW2, Black Ops, Killzone 2, and Medal of Honor for PS3. And although I can get kills in these games, I can never stay alive long enough between them to earn kill streaks. I always get owned by some smart talking 12 year old with a mic headset. So I feel your pain, OP.

I used to suck pretty badly at MP in shooters as well... I'm still not very good, but at least I do better than I used to. One game where I usually do pretty well is Uncharted 2, where my K/D is actually above one. And my longest kill-streak in one game was 12 (I was actually 12-0 in that game).

I don't know if bots are such a good idea. Playing against the AI is generally very different from playing against humans and you'll pick up habits that work well against machines, but fail miserably when pitted against an intelligent opponent. Essentially you'll be learning a different game.

COD is a camper fest. I always get picked off by some punk camping in a hiding place somewhere, because I'm used to the older school Quake/UT style deathmatch, and often run around the map willy nilly. LOL

me too, but sometimes the campers leave themselves wide open. the other day there was a guy camper-sniping on that footbridge on Derailed. I walked up behind him and took him out with a headshot without him seeing me coming, he was so fixated on his sniper scope.

and that's just one example.
