How the Internet is Ruining Star Trek XI

Nah, it was more exciting for me watching the early rumors emerge - eh, probably BS, let's not get our hopes up - then for them get reported in more and more plausible contexts.

After the Kirk casting is announced, that's it for Trek XI news till I see the movie. I won't be looking around for ANYTHING about the script. Casting doesn't count as a spoiler for me, but I hate being spoiled on plot twists.

The only way in which the Internet ruins "Star Trek" is that it's a huge arena for bitching and publicly nursing resentments.

That's the way the Internet makes Star Trek (and everything else) better. If the complaints are justified, then it's satisfying to read them. If they are idiotic, it's fun to mock them. Win/win all around!

Same here; I might just have to drop off this board entirely, because once I actually see something, like "So what do you think about...?" I get really curious.

Spoilers usually don't bug me much so I don't go out of my way to avoid them.

If anything, the internet has made me realize there are a lot of jackass idiot narrow-minded Trekkies that deserve all the loathing and hating given to them.

As for spoilers, is a casting announcement really a spoiler outside of surprise cameos? Unless you were going to be at ComicCon, Quinto and Nimoy's appearances there aren't that big of a deal.

Bear in mind that in 1982 - twenty-five years ago - Trekkies knew that Spock would die in the second "Star Trek" movie before it started shooting.

If a production company was smart, they'd hire a PR flack to get on the internet and post false evidence all day long for false plot details and false casting. They'd hire a second-rate FX house to create fake images which could be randomly posted... they'd take internet spoilers into account and mount a massive disinformation campaign so that people would still be surprised when they finally saw the film, even if they had sought spoiler information all along.

Imagine the sudden, shocked swell of gratitude from fans who "couldn't help themselves" and thought they'd gone into the movie thoroughly spoiled only to discover they got a completely fresh and exciting experience.

You know that might be funny. Just photoshop random TOS images to look like the XI movie, then post 'em all over and run. That would give everybody a nice surprise.

I will still go see the movie even that I know everything about it because of the net. Gee, it is like in Star Wars you know that in eppi I that some day he is going to turn to the dark side and have children. It was a no brainer, but people went to the movie period.

Interesting concept about the misinformation campaign.

Strictly speaking, JJ is going to ruin Star Trek, not the internet. I might just simply download a pirate copy and watch it at home to see if I want to reward TPTB with my money.

I am liking the quality of the movies less and less aas they get made. Seems like they are trying to please the wrong crowd these days, not the crowd that kept Trek in business for the last 40 years. I used to go see each film repeatedly in the theaters, but that has been waning continually. I think my record was 6 times for Generations.

I am not of the opinion that anyone can just walk in and start making Star Trek, nor can they woo a hot director and expect that quality to automatically transfer to Star Trek.

The crowd that kept Trek in business for decades actually left about twelve years ago and has shown no interest in returning. When you talk about pleasing current fandom, you're talking about the few guys who won't leave at Last Call, when the bartender is flicking the lights on and off.

on behalf of the internet i would just like to appologize for ruining star trek xi (oh and I am terribly sorry that I let people know it is called just 'star trek' and not star trek xi anymore). I would like to say sorry for debunking the tom cruise as spock or Robbie williams as kirk rumors. I am sorry for debunking the 'academy movie' rumors and for building momentum for the acceptance of Quinto as the new spock. I am sorry for keeping people informed about the production and providing background and context. I am so embarassed that I have provided interviews with JJ Abrams, Robert Orci, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy...what was I thinking? I am especially sorry for now starting an outreach between the film makers and the fans. I am a very bad person I know

to all those people who I forced against their will to read my site and other sites that reported news....I humbly ask for your forgiveness

I think the internet is more of a help. See right now were following the movie, and most of us are excited about it. We'll probably see it, or at least buy the DVD. We're probably also gonna talk about it to our friends, maybe drag a buddy along, something like that. So more people know about the movie than would without the interwebs.

on the other hand, yeah you get spoilers. I guess that's probably unavoidable. But it didn't slow down Potterdom, so I don't think it will kill XI.

If not for the Internet, I would've fogotten about Star Trek by 2000 (2002 tops) and wouldn't give a shit about ST XI -- a movie that I learned about through the Internet -- today.
