How the hell do you pack lightly???

I haven't been to a club since I was in highschool. It was an 18 and under club, so it was pretty lame. Obnoxiously loud music, no alcohol, and STDs painted on the walls.

Never again.

I don't know yet. Probably in general. I don't really see a reason.

We have bars. Some bars have dance floors if I really want to dance. That's good enough for me.

Why pack 6 undershirts AND 7 "wife beaters"?!

That's double the number of undershirts you need! Hell, I'd go as far as to say triple. For 6 Days 3 undershirts would work for me.

I'm a heavy packer by instinct (the just-in-case mentality, as you said), but I work hard to consciously decrease the amount of stuff I carry on me. If it can't fit in a (baggage + carry on) combination, I'm doing something wrong. I like to look neat (even fashion-conscious), but sometimes you have to make compromises.

That would be my suggestion for a 6 days stay for a congress (where you would need more formal attire than a backpack holiday)
7 undershirts (t-shirts or a-shirts)
1 long-sleeved undershirts (in case of cold weather, to use with undershirt)
7 underpants
7 pairs of socks
1 pairs denim
1 pairs of slacks (plus one on you while traveling)
1 pair of pajama pants
1 pairs of shoes (plus one on you)
no short-sleeved shirts (what are they for? just use long-sleeved and roll them)
1 jacket (plus one on you) - jackets are the most space-consuming item
1 zip-up sweater
6 ties (they weight nothing and can really change the look of a suit)
4 dress shirts (never wear them twice in a row, wash in auto-laundry or hang them with care and they'll look good even if not completely fresh)
1 vest (plus one on yourself)
no belts (pick up a neuter color and wear it on yourself)
no hat (use one on yourself while traveling)
toiletries
laptop, chargers, business cards, sketch book, pens, markers, ipod, watches

I'm sure you can skim more if you want.

I guess this comes from being an engineer and fashion-conscious; I'm flying to Chicago tomorrow to speak at a conference this weekend at the University of Chicago... I'll be there for 6 days, and now that I'm done packing, I can not fathom how some people "live out of a backpack/suitcase".

For a 6-day stay I have packed...
6 undershirts
2 longsleeved undershirts
7 underpants
7 wife-beaters (aka a-shirts)
9 pairs of socks
2 pairs denim
3 pairs of slacks
1 pair of pajama pants
4 pairs of shoes
6 short-sleeved shirts
2 jackets
1 zip-up sweater
3 ties
5 dress shirts
2 vests
2 belts
2 hats
toiletries
laptop, chargers, business cards, sketch book, pens, markers, ipod, watches

But really, it's the clothes that take up the space. I mean, I was trying to save up on space too! I didn't bring any bright-colored clothing because then I'd have to bring my complementing shoes. I just packed primarily black, brown, and reds to go with my black, brown, and red-accented shoes...

Do you pack lightly? Or are you a fellow heavy packer? How much and what do you typically pack for a week-long visit?
I probably don't own that many clothes in my closet and dresser...

If you want to understand travelling light, then understand that you wash your underwear and socks each night in the sink, wring them out in a towel and hang them up and they should be dry by morning. You have one extra pair for emergencies.

If you are living out of backpack, you aren't giving lectures at a conference for a week. You need "stage clothes", but do you need 3 ties? Is the conference in the middle of nowhere with no amenities? Can you use a hotel that will have overnight laundry service? Dry cleaning? Your suits will have to go to the cleaner anyway so what are you saving by bringing more than two?

You don't need 2 jackets unless these are suit jacket? Plus sweaters? Two pairs of jeans?

Pare all this down to 2 basic suits for your presentations, one spare set of casuals for walking around, the clothes you are wearing, one pair of dress shoes and one pair of cross trainers, one change of socks and underwear (buy more when you get there, throw out the old ones before you come back). Go to a drug store and buy a week's toiletries if necessary, most should be in your hotel room anyway.

If you are speaking for an industry that doesn't require suits, like maybe a more casual IT or engineering crowd, you could save even more by combining your presention and casuals, just pack some khaki slacks and nice shirt you can trade off for a t-shirt and hoodie later in the day.

I'm a just-in-case packer, too. But, how much I actually pack depends on where we're going. If I know I'll have reliable access to laundry facilities, I pack a lot less because I know I can wash what I have.

For 6 days, I'd cut the shirts, undershirts, and wifebeaters to no more than 9 total (take your pic on how). I'd also cut the shoes in half at the minimum. Are the jackets suit jackets? Can't you just bring one belt and wear it (it's just a week, you'll live). Why do you need watches plural?

I'm a pretty light packer by comparison, I'd have to say. Things like extra pairs of socks appeal to me, but some of the other stuff strike me as completely unnecessary.

I can pack lightly, though sometimes I don't bother. Depends on where I'm going, why and how much I'll have to drag my crap around during the trip. If it's just to and from the airport and hotel, then I don't care how much I take.

Amsterdam for 2 weeks? Got everything including my computer into a backpack. Did laundry two or three times. I knew I'd basically be sitting around coffee shops the whole time, so I didn't need much variety, the weather was predictable and I would be walking with my stuff fairly frequently. England for a week? Much larger bag, about 2x the stuff, because I didn't know what I might need, what the weather would be like and I would be petty much planted in one place the majority of the time.

To lighten this up, remember, they do have laundromats in Chicago and your hotel will have dry cleaning service. Cut the basics in half...

Actually, why do you need undershirts and wife-beaters?

Anyway:

3 undershirts
2 longsleeved undershirts
4 underpants
3 wife-beaters (aka a-shirts)
4 pairs of socks
2 pairs denim
2 pairs of slacks
1 pair of pajama pants
2 pairs of shoes
4 short-sleeved shirts
2 jackets (wear one on the plane)
1 zip-up sweater
3 ties
3 dress shirts
1 vests
2 belts (wear one on the plane)
2 hats
toiletries
laptop, chargers, business cards, sketch book, pens, markers, ipod, watch

Let me just start by saying that this list is four years worth of clothes.

4 pairs of shoes?? I'm still wearing the same pair I bought five years ago (of course, I spend the bulk of my time getting around in a wheelchair, so that's probably the difference).

Only one jacket and one belt is needed. Same with slacks. You can get away with two of those, but then, no denim is needed.

Hats? What is this, the 1950's?

All you really need is a fresh pair of underwear in a brown paper bag.

You are over-packed.

I'm a light packer. Even for a business conference I can pack seven days worth of clothes, shoes and personal grooming items in a carry-on duffel bag. I do use a different bag for my laptop and accessories. Duffel goes in the overhead compartment, laptop bag goes under the seat in front of me and I'm good to go.

If I need a suit I only bring one and I have a three suiter that folds in half and can carry the same load as the duffel bag. Sometimes the suit jacket can get a little wrinkled, but I usually find that hanging it in the bathroom with a hot shower running and the door closed for about 30 minutes will steam out any travel damage.

I'm in the IT field though which tends to be casual so suits are generally the exception and not the rule.

Mh, maybe I should get one of those. The suit bags I've seen around here just carry the suit and nothing else. I'll get a look on the net. Thanks for the tip.

I'm in academia, so suits are not usually required, but sometimes expected. Moreover, I look really good in one. ;)
