How ST VI SHOULD have ended... IMHO

But I still subscribe to the idea that McCoy had the steadiest hands in the ship...

My take too. The procedure to modify the torpedo may have required some delicate work, something surgeon McCoy would be capable of.

I dunno.... Didn't Chang point out in the trial that McCoy's hands were shaking? And didn't he admit to a touch of arthritis? Don't wait for the translation -- answer me NOW!!!!

However you spin it, the torpedo specialists would still be your go-to guys for on the fly mods.

And it still seems WAY out of character for Kirk to just sit there getting the sh!t kicked out of him without even TRYING to talk/threaten/taunt/negotiate with Chang....

Spock needed an extra hand...why not use the guy who was currently available on the bridge? McCoy was just standing around making smartass comments before that. And these guys are supposed to be the best of the best, so why assume they are each only good at one thing? Why was Scotty the one to go off and shoot the assassin?

Kirk beams aboard the Klingon ship and flushes all the toilets at the same time causing Chang's vessel to implode.

I actually like that in the final moments of the film, almost every member of the classic team has something important that they contribute:

- Kirk saves the president in the nick of time.
- Spock and McCoy modify the torpedo.
- Scotty phasers the assassin.
- Uhura conceives the idea of using a homing torpedo.
- Sulu rides into help with the cavalry.

Only Chekov doesn't have much going on during the climax of the film.

I really liked times when the entire ensemble got to be used well.

^ True, Chekov got quite a bit to do during the course of the film, but most of it consisted of him looking like a moron. By this point in his career, he'd been Chief of Security and a first officer. Quite a dramatic step back for him to be both back at the navigator's station and, well, an idiot.

Didn't Chekov also discover the Klingon blood on the transporter pad?

One other thing about the OP's idea is that you had a Bird of Prey against two Starships, one a Constitution Class and the other an Excelsior Class.... No amount of smack talk by Kirk was going to make Chang that stupid as to decloak and fight two superior ships with the sure ending of him getting killed.

In regards to Klingon Honor, Klingons use Cloaking Technology to sneak around and have the element of surprise.... being able to use cloaking while also attacking at the same time would be a welcome treat for Klingons.

I've always seen the torpedo thing as a callback (or whatever the best term might be) to TVH when McCoy is trying to get Spock to talk to him about their shared experience. Spock doesn't acknowledge it then, but he does later by asking for assistance in modifying the torpedo.

Who knows how much McCoy might actually have subconsciously retained from having Spock's katra, and how much Spock's katra retained from McCoy? I could be way off base, but that's the way I see it.

Besides, if Spock didn't think McCoy could help he wouldn't have asked.

Not off base. That's nice.

Klingons use what weapons they have. Everything on a Klingon ship is a weapon and canbe used as such by a skilled enough captain. Chang would not forgo using a useful weapon that gives him the advantage. Honor is winning the battle, especially against superior opponents. There are underhanded tricks and such, but using a weapon as intended is generally not dishonorable. Chang even announced himself before firing on Kirk. He could have just openned fire and not taunted at all.

CHANG: Don't talk to me about fighting honorably, Kirk! I heard about you kicking that guy in the nads on Rura Penthe.
