How ST can be "canon" and still have new technology

From what little I've heard, Quinto's makeup is by far the closest visual congruence we're going to see between old and new.

That's as may be, but I don't think that Trek XI is going to go as far as nuBSG in terms of how changed from the original it would be. As a fan of the original BSG, there is very little resemblence between the two and I am far from delusional.

Star Trek's done the opposite before, in various series, useful technology pops up and is destroyed or not used again e.g. the lie detector in (IIRC) "Wolf in the Fold" that would have made Troi somewhat useless or the cloaking device from "The Enterprise Incident".
