Santa is a Time Lord. The sleigh is his TARDIS. Gallifreyan technology allows him to store a lot of gifts in a (relatively) small bag.
I think this explains it quite well.
I was going to make a comment about Santa calling in help from the Doctor each year, but this makes so much more sense. It bothers me a little that the Doctor being the only Time Lord left means Santa was killed by Daleks in the Time War, though.
Poor santa, and the doctor would have won if the tooth fairy had activated that dalek kill device and father time wasn't an asshole.

I can't remember when I stopped believing in Santa (though it was some time before that), but if memory serves, I was 12 when my mother finally stopped making me accompany her to the mall to get my picture taken on Santa's lap.
(My mother has a lot to answer for.)
