It's true actually. The vast majority of people are excited, even the cautious ones, and it's usually not these people who are commenting on the videos, it's people who are motivated by anger or dissatisfaction. As the show creeps closer, the genuine fans tend to show their real excitement, and that's what I am seeing more of now than a month ago.

No, I agree with you. I might have posted in the wrong order, my apologies. I was referring to the negative reactions still being the most vocal, which I do not see. Quite the opposite, like you are seeing.

More than 50% of poll respondents in this very thread said they are 'positive' or 'very positive'.
Over 50% being a majority, and our standard of proof having been established as comments on the internet, our work here is done. Stop the clock.
67% are positive to some degree. Probably another 25% are worried about canon, so they don't count. The remaining 8% are the miserable ones who basically want the show to burn.

This is a fan forum. Of course the people here should be excited that a new series comes out!
But we aren't enough to keep a series alive on our own. And outside of specific Trek fansites - on more general genre fan sites - and even comments sections on many Trek news sites - expectations are much more muted.

The fact that HERE we have more "positive" than "very positive" votes speaks for more of a "let's wait and see" approach. The show could be great. It could be a disaster. We do't know. There are signs for both - the creative shuffle behind the scenes, the dark, grey tone, the new klingons, that we still have no official on-screen picture of our main ship - vs. the amazing cast, the great number of talented people behind the scenes, and the general production values.

One thing is sure, though: The hype isn't as big as it was for e.g. the JJTrek reboot. This one is under bigger pressure to succeed on it's own, instead of being able to rely on franchise IP alone.

Well I don't have data for the general public reaction to Discovery, and unless you can provide any, I suspect you don't either. So I'm going on what data we do have. The poll here shows a strong swing towards generally positive reactions, and the show has got a lot of promising coverage in the trade press and entertainment mags. I've not seen anything to back up the idea of a disquiet among the general viewing public.

Since it will not be shown in the UK I am neutral, for those who do get to see it I hope its a great show!

But, cultcross, the YouTube comments. The YouTube comments!

I was speaking specifically of this poll.

In the world at large, maybe 80% of people are positive about if they are aware of it. My only other metric is video likes, and generally, these greatly outnumber the dislikes on Discovery videos. The CBS videos number in the thousands to only a few dozen dislikes per video. The 2nd trailer had 50,000 to 400 ratio.

The problem is not haters or trolls. They will always be there. The problem is a general lack of interest.
We on this forum, the hardcore Trek-nerd crowd, are "mostly positive". With many threads arguing back and forth. What the show is lacking is genuine fan enthusiasm. Which would be there - simply the means of the sheer size of the Trek fanbase - if the product looked like genuine high quality Trek. It certainly looks like a lot of money was poured in (which usually is a good sign). But it has yet failed to generate more than mild interest.
I don't doubt the show will be "mostly good". But I'm not yet convinced either it is good enough that any of my non-Trek non-nerd friends will watch it. Quite a few of them who actually watch Game of Thrones, comic book movies and other genre fiction.
Simply put: By terms of pop-cultural penetration and mainstream interest it in, this looks much more like Enterprise than like Next Generation.

The only place I've seen negative comments was on the Discovery main page and maybe stuff from Trekcore. I'm part of some groups (and here) who are really positive about the series, if only because it's the first time Trek has been on TV in over 12 years. Now that we're a less than a month away, I'm getting really excited for it and I think that feeling is resonating with most of the trek fanbase. Also, as someone who went to STLV, I think everyone in that room was really excited for the new series, so yeah there might be the quiet majority.

ok thanks. In that case I am positive, I'll judge it when it airs.
Sept 25th. 24 hours after its premiere in the USA. This is a great moment for Trek. For the first time, it will be shown in 188 countries simultaneously on the same day.

Is this not a contradiction in your argument? The fans all vote positive because they're fans, but they lack enthusiasm? If I'm a fan of a franchise and I'm 'positive' about a new instalment in that franchise, I'll definitely be watching it! I can't think many wouldn't. As Jason Isaacs said, even most of those who aren't positive will watch it.

As for general viewing public, well I can't speak for the US because of the extra hurdle of subscribing the CBS AllAccess, I don't know enough about CBS or the popularity of the other shows it offers to comment. But outside the US, where Netflix market penetration is pretty decent already, and 'Star Trek Voyager' is always in the 'trending' list on UK Netflix, I think it will find an audience ready and waiting.

Well not many of them probably watched Game of Thrones from episode 1, having got excited based on the trailer. I didn't even know GoT existed until season 2, and I consider myself quite a genre TV fan. Yet it grew into arguably the biggest genre show of all time. You're not going to be watercooler TV from episode 1, it takes time for this stuff to build. Even the first season streaming hits like OITNB and House of Cards weren't popular prior to release.

I remember fan interest in 1987, and I think Discovery has surpassed it by quite a wide margin. Think about the negatives from when it was delayed..the very fact so many people were up in arms is because of the sheer impatience for seeing a new Trek show for the first time in 12 years. Pro or con, this is the most widely talked about new Trek show in history.
