How much $$$$

Given Star Trek's history with feature films, spending $150 million to make this is taking a huge gamble. IIRC there has only been one film out of the ten to make more than $100 million and that was TVH, and that only beat the $100 million mark by a tiny bit.

For this film to succeed, it's gonna have to do probably 3 times better than the most successful mainstream crossover Trek film. That's a pretty tall order.

You need to compensate for inflation. In today’s dollars, all first four films made over 100 million domestically.

Does anyone know what the budget was for ST XI, and what would be an acceptable profit margin for the studios to green light a sequile. With all the crap being put out by Hollywood these days, ST would seem a lock to get another one or two films over the next few years...

according to iesb.net after the marketing cost's are calculated in , the actual budget for this film is really going to be aroub 200 mil or over! http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3466&Itemid=99

WOW $200 million for a budget? That is ALOT of money. It will have to be one of the most successful Sci-fi movies of all time to make a profit with that huge budget!

I am not sure is completely accurate in its figures. The production budget (the budget we all commonly refer to) is reportedly closer $130 Million according to TrekMovie. This article was written 4 months before Paramount moved the release date, which could have also changed the planned promotional budget from what they would have done for a Christmas release to what they would have done for a summer tentpole release. $200 Million total is pretty well what I was expecting when you combine both budgets, if not more.

I like to look at actual examples rather than trying to calculate this stuff myself. The production budget of Spider-man 3 was about $260 million. That's before ads. That movie literally cost twice as much as STXI.

It made about $320 domestic, and $890 mil total. If we assume all other things are proportional, with the ads for SM3 costing twice as much as STXI, then STXI needs to make half of that: $445 mil total, and at least 200 mil domestic.

That would make it proportionally as successful as SM3, which is considered a success, and SM4 is in the works I think.

Yes, but 200 Million is not the budget, it's 150. When referring to "budget", one does not include ad money or anything else. 150 million is a pretty middle of road tentpole movie number. It could be much larger, or somewhat smaller. Trek doesn't even have the largest budget of sci-fi movies of this summer.

I'm sure others have mentioned this before.

Adjusting for inflation, the first 4 Star Trek movies were big hits.

In today's dollar, TMP and TVH both took more than $200mil; and TWOK and TSFS both took about $175mil domestically.

After that, there was been a steady decline.

Why? Well, in the early days there were no video and certainly no DVDs.

Star Trek on TV was limited to TOS reruns.

And Kirk & Co kicked universal butt.

People saw the movies again and again. Today, we see it once and then wait for the special edition DVD.

Interestingly, the budget for TMP (about $45mil in 1979) equates to about $135mil in today's dollar.

TMP went on to make (according to IMDB) $139mil worldwide, or about $430mil in today's dollar.

I fervently wish ST11 can at least match those numbers.

Cheers

If that's true then, that makes me feel much better and believe that this Trek can make $150-200 in the US alone and then worldwide total should bring in similar numbers. Paramount will be happy with $300 especially since any sequels will probably cost less since stuff like ENT sets can re re-used etc.

when i was at the movies recently they showed trailers for terminator, watchmen ,and trek .i could hear people clapping and a definate buzz in the audience when the other trailers were shown, but when the trek trailer was on it was dead silent except for a couple of snickers.the people in that theatre didn't seem too impressed by it! personally i think abrams and paramount are going to be disapointed with the box office totals for this movie.i really don't think mainstream fans are going to line up to see it. if he in turn alienates the hardcore fans with the whole timeline change thing he could be looking at a major flop.i hope i'm wrong, but somehow i don't think i am.

Funny, when I saw the trailer at the Bond movie, the response was surprise and "that looks good", so I suppose it depends on what movie you were at, doesn't it?

IOW, this isn't even weak anecdotal evidence.

...and the actors have presumably been signed at set salaries for the next 2 installments...

Sorry, but I hope the movie does not do well.

Here is a list of movies that will come out in May. Star Trek has to go up against

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Angels & Demons
Terminator Salvation
Night at the Museum
Up

I would rather see any of the movies that I listed above, then this Star Trek Movie.

If a movie season is 13 weeks (as in 4 x 13 weeks = 52), you could watch all six movie, a fortnight apart. You could even see your favourites twice or more, if you go to the movies once a week.

Are you afraid Star Trek might hurt these other movies?

Seriously, why do you want Star Trek to fail?

Now I'm probably the least big trek fan around this forum when it comes jumping up and down to watch any form of trek at all. As said in other threads I love the setting, have a general dislike for most onscreen presentations of the setting. For my fix: www.ditl.org has all the information I enjoy about trek, setting details.

However, this is one movie I will be seeing first.

terminator and wolverine I do want to see, but work and social life have priority there. I can wait for these to come out on DVD. However depending on how work is at the time, I could possibly expect the same result for the trek movie: wait for dvd.

However I'm rpetty sure I could fit Trek and terminator in.

And by waiting for dvd...here's where I just borrow the dvd's from people...I rarely have ever spent bucks on dvd's of singular movies. Only series boxed sets (non-trek series)

Oh this is going to be fun.

I've already made my prediction in another thread.
I'm rarely wrong when it comes to things in the gaming or movie markets.

When the naysayers soil themselves because of how successful this
film is I'll be laughing my ass off.

^Burn the heretic! ;)

It staggers me to see that there are so many people here, who post on a Trek BBS every day, who seemingly aren't fans of ST.
