How much network influence do you think CBS has with "Discovery?"

Yep, that interview confirms a lot that's been obvious since early on: the studio suits micromanage and dictate to the showrunners-of-record.

In the example she gives, maybe I'm happy they did. The show really did need to get off the ship. That probably explains, though, why the Pahvo detour was so pointless and disconnected from the rest of the season.

Even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and again.

I agree but I wonder how much resitance the showrunners put up for their own idea's. I'm sure they aren't like Roddenberry who seemed to have a never ending fight with Network suits. I hope they aren't complete pushovers or maybe I do because I wonder what their vision is exactly for the show. Having lots of Fuller writes leave sort of opens the idea that they might at the very least trying to make the show more in their vision.

Jason

I think that the interview itself gives a sense of where the push back , if any, would likely be against an order like this - as jadeb says, this may well have been a great idea that improved the show. So the producers would be most concerned about the logistics and expense of pulling something like this together in a short time frame. The questions would be what sort of additional support, if necessary, they could expect from the studio to get this done? If the answers were reassuring, canny showrunners might look upon this kind of edict as an unexpected gift.

Seems odd to root for the suits, but after what we've gotten so far, I'm conflicted.

I hated that Pahvo episode. The mission made no sense. We got the obligatory "crew member acting goofy" plot. And of course we learned that Kelpiens are superstrong, as humans are necessarily the weakest race in the galaxy. GoofySaru crushing their communicators made me ache.

I wasn't that keen on the story either, but, boy, I'd rather visit an actual alien planet than read more Klingon subtitles.

Can you talk about the challenge of designing tech that fits in between Enterprise and TOS?

It’s impossible. So, when I started out I was like “Wow, this isn’t TOS.” You can never go back to TOS. Those were charming, lovely sets made out of cardboard and sticky tape. You can tell if you watched them what they did. Like when they went to the Mirror Universe, they literally took a Terran logo – which we did use as a basis of ours – and slapped it on a couple walls and called it done, called it Mirror. We have all this technology at our fingertips to build, including 3D printing, and the audience expectation now in science fiction is to give them things that are more “designed,” and more exquisitely designed. We just had to make that leap of faith and say the audience is going to come with us on that journey. Yes, we are pre-dating TOS, but no we are not going to offer you TOS again fifty years later.

Torches and pitchfork bearers, to the ready!

The suits write the checks, so naturally, they exert a considerable amount of control. Piss them off, and they've been known to kill production of a show mid-filming of an episode (as they did Max Headroom).

Just ask Soval. Vulcans had trouble classifying humans.

Shit.
I almost forgot what a Star Trek series where you can actually SEE the sets and costumes looks like. Damn.

I think DIS probably has the least interference from any network or studio since the days of TNG and DS9. Sure, there's probably a mandate from the mountain to keep every episode within budget and finished on time like every TV show gets (which may have been why Fuller left), but this show probably has more freedom as far as content than previous Trek shows, IMO.

That WAS probably the case before the first delay. Or the second. Or before they fired Fuller. Or before they delayed their show by more than a year. They had interests to pay during this time.

Honestly? This series so far looks like a fuckin' rush job. They got to a point where it almost entirely didn't mattered what was on screen, as long as they had a goddamn show to run and bring some revenue in. Nothing on this show is finished - neither the sets, the vfx, or by god even the scripts. Everything has the bare minimal quality a product can have to actually sell it. That wasn't a "troubled" production, it was a goddamn dumpster fire.

It's the equivalent of shipping a game that's buggy to the point of being completely broken for 40$, with a promise to fix those issues in updates, if only to bring in some cash in to keep the company afloat.

I liked the Pahvo mission, but I wish they'd had more time. I hope they go back at some point.

Humans snap Klingon necks like breadsticks, and generally fare well against them in close quarter combat. Apart from playing "don't cross the streams" solo, I don't know what avantages Klingons have over humans.

Physical strength doesn't mean much really though. White Rhinos are pretty much stronger than humans but we've wiped them out.

Watch the end of STIII, Klingons were far stronger than humans in hand-to-hand combat. DiscoKlingons look more alien but they're weaker.

LOL at the stream-crossing. But ever since TNG, I think it's established that Klingons are stronger than humans, although you're right - not drastically so. I just want a couple of races that are weaker than humans for once.

I don't know. Kirk as a flag officer presumably not in the shape he was as a captain did pretty well one-on-one with Kruge. David was a milktoast so I don't count him. A soft sentient pillow could have killed David
